I realize that most of the time data recovery won't require these measures. But the 1 time out of 100 that they do apply people need to be aware that they exist. If your hard drive is dead for physical reasons. Here are a couple of options I have successfully used.

If the hard drive is dead because of the controller board on the disk died. You can obtain another disk with the same model number(from eBay) and put that board on the disk you want to recover your information from. As along as the read heads and platters are good/usable the drive will be recoverable. In fact if the read heads were parked when the board died (such as machine off and water damage) you won't need a recovery program you can just back it up. If the heads weren't parked you will need to hook the drive up externally to another machine and use a data recovery program.

If the hard drive is dead because the bearings are gone on it. Dead bearings usually is noted by a ticking noise. People often assume that the read heads are damaged causing the failure, sometimes that is true. Other times it is the read heads are not in their proper path due to the slop in the bearings. But unless you try this or similar you will never know. You can hook it up to another machine as an external hard drive and put dry ice on the top of the dead hard drive many times this can buy you enough running time to copy your files over to another hard drive. Depending on how much data needs recovered it may take a number of attempts since moving data off the hard drive makes it spin faster, than it does at idle, creating heat and giving the bearing play.

you can remove the drive from your PowerBook and then try connecting it as an external drive to another Mac. either install the drive mechanism into an external USB2.0 or FireWire enclosure, or use something like this USB Universal Drive adapter

of course if your hard drive is actually dead, this won't help, you may need more extreme measures (like a data recovery $ervice) to recover your data...

but before doing that you should first check if it's something other than your hard drive that is preventing your PB from starting up.

Have you tried booting from your OS install disc? try to reboot your machine with OS disc inserted and holding down "C" key. if you can successfully boot, then try to run Disk Utility to verify and repair the disk.

This really depends on how valuable the data is to you. If you would just like to have it back or your business is dependent on it. Just how much would you pay to get it back? Let me know and then we can proceed.

Tips for you to pay attention:

1.If data comes in faster than backups, and is precious, consider RAID 1, RAID 5 or RAID 10 disk configurations. A RAID array will keep running when one physical drive dies. A good one will even re-write a replacement drive that's "hot swapped" into it without stopping. External controllers will do this better than ones integrated into motherboards.

2.Programs like GRC's Spinrite does an excellent job at getting down to every last bit and ensuring that everything is working on the most basic of levels, however, if it finds that a sector of a hard drive is corrupted, it will attempt a recovery of it. It has saved many hard drives from failing, and has helped recover gigabytes of data. Spinrite is in its 6th version and has proven very successful. Please note, while Spinrite and other software hard disk recovery programs work well, they will not permanently fix a problem every time. Therefore, it is recommended that software recovery only be used to backup the data.

3.Some programs, such as Spinrite mentioned above, perform maintenance on hard drives to prevent flaws from forming.

We’ve all been there – accidentally pressing the wrong button and losing all the data you have been working on in an instant, rendering it irretrievable. This, unfortunately, is a very common and frustrating human error. Pressing delete by accident or losing data due to a formatting error can cause you to lose all of your work with no obvious way of bringing it back. At Swansea Data Recovery, we can help you recover our data if you are business owner, gamer or simply like to write. Just get in touch and we will discuss how we will go about retrieving your data and provide a no obligation diagnosis and quote.

Our computer’s hard drive requires Hard Disk Data Recovery firmware to be able to function properly. Made up of internal program(s), firmware is an essential requirement and helps our computer’s work on a day to day basis. However, sometimes firmware can become corrupt and fail and cause lasting damage to your hard drive. If your computer has been damaged because of faulty firmware, you could end up losing valuable data and your computer can become damaged and even unusable.
