MacBook Pro not detecting battery for device less than 6 months of use

Update: I got technician to repair the fried usb c/ charging port. They told me the black square thing is not working(see attached pic). ''The battery was working without adapter in his store which shows 40% life. But after I shut down in store, it does not detects battery any more.'' Ran apple diagonsitc shows no battery detected, coconut battery shows 0 mah, nan capacity. The device is manufactured in 2019 for about a year from now, the actual usage of it is less than 6 months with no game or any intense work. I tried PRAM and SMC reset, I update the system from Catalina to Big OS Sur, nothing works. I don’t think it is the battery but any idea? Thank you.

There were never any message about bad battery/battery needs to be replaced/ battery issue.

Back story of what happened before repair:

I got a macbook pro late 2017 13.3 inch with 2 thunder ports/ usb c ports. It is working but has unexpected restart/shuntdown with panic errors that happens randomly after water damage I believed. It was working properly other than it sometimes shut down/restart on its own.

I open the macbook up, disconnect the cables and wipe the parts with alcohol swaps Issues happen when I reconnect the devices. At first, I plug all on the component back and it won’t power on or anything. I connect the power source (usb c cable) and it powers up but does not detect the battery showing an “x” over the battery icon while all the cables are connected and no breakage is found.

  • is this a problem with the battery flex cable? It was powering on with usb c cable but not detecting / charging the battery. [the battery was in good health]

I try to adjust the positions and cables while the pluging in the charger as I cannot get it to detect the battery in any way. This is horrible because I hear sparks and smells burn from the thunder port that I plugged in. I discconected it immediately but it never power back on any more. No response when I try the other usb c port either.

I believe I fry the usb c port. Can this be fix via soldering a new usb c port or not? I don’t want to pay $800 for a complete logic board repair. How can I get the device back working again given now 1. it does not charge 2. it does not detect the battery 3.it randomly shut down. Thank you.

Update (09/06/2020)

@danj thank you for your replies. I replaced the battery for $110. Which since then, there has not been any issue with random shutdown even though I only tested to drain from 100% to 5%. I suspect the battery was the only problem now I think about it. The only reasonable explanation is that water damages the battery so it is not chargeable indeed but system incorrect detect the battery capacity which can explain how it shut down itself randomly. Since I open the board the corrosion sign is there, technician does not seem to take any measures on that. I believed my initial suspicion of that minor corrosion damaged causes the problem is incorrect and I might indeed solve the issue with simple battery replacement for $110 rather than try to force it detect and…. broke the usb c charging port causing me additiom $185… . This is a really sad way to learn my lesson and thank you for your advises :) Happy Thanksgiving.

Thank you for replying!! Sorry, I haven't check the post for many days. The device is currently ‘dead" as the battery was not detected by the macbook, and after I fry the charging port it does not get power no matter which thunder ports I plug in. I could not get into the login screen any more... Not sure what to do at the moment. Any advise? Thank you.

Sadly having a fully dead system makes diagnosing remotely just not possible.

Time to visit someone with the needed skills and access to parts. Where do you live? Country & nearest city.

Thank you for replying. I live in NYC,USA I wasnt sure how much the cost is going to be. As Apple would charge $800 and I will be better off buying a new one with such cost.

@danj Hi, I went to a different technician HiTech @ canal st near by. The guy did fixed my computer. It powers up. And in store the battery is remaining at 40% . I shut it down but when I got home it will not detect / charge my battery any more. It shuts off imediately when the adapter is unplug. Shows charging @ 0 % . With the app you recommended, it will reads 0mah, NAH. I went back to the technician, he asked for 100 dollars to replace the battery. I am not sure, I don't think it is the battery. The device is manufactured 2019, actual usage is less than 6 months and perfectly working in the store too. I am unsure what to do now, can you please advice? Thank you.

@hobbiest - Well I don't what to tell you as I have no diagnostic data. Can you please post the CoconutBattery snapshot so I can see.

What did he say he did and how much did he charge you?

@danj Hi, thank you for reply. I updated the post. Basically, he said the problem was the fried usb c port and a little black square piece he gave me (see pic). For that he charged me $185. The battery is currently not working despite it was working in his store and less than 6 months old with no intense usage. (I attached the power saver screen and coconutBattery snapshot) I went back to his store now he told me this battery is dead because I did not use for a few months and I can never fix the battery unless I replaced it. Which he wants to charge me $100 for replacement. I really don't think it is the battery but don't know much....
