MacBook Pro Built in Trackpad only working when plugged on charge

Hi Guys.

So My 2011 MBP has developed a fault where the trackpad works completely fine when plugged in using the power adapter. As soon as I disconnect the charger, the trackpad becomes very jittery and its practically un-usable!

I have replaced the battery since there was a message saying “Service battery soon“, but its made no difference.

Ive read on other forums where people have the reverse issue where it works on battery but not when plugged in. Any ideas what the issue could be?

My initial thoughts are some sort of grounding issue? I checked the connector for the battery and cleaned both sides ( Battery + Logic Board connectors ) but still having the same issue.

Can anyone help?

You'll need to see if something pops under the onboard diagnostics. Restart your system and press the D key to enter into diagnostics, let us know what the error messages are.

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

The only thing that popped up was "4xxx/6x40000005 <>oa" Battery

I presume this is due to the replacement battery which is not Genuine? The old Battery I replaced was an original Apple Battery that came installed in the MBP

mmm... Thats telling me the SMC line to the battery is not working.

Lets check the battery and the charging logic, install this gem of an App CoconutBattery with the MagSafe charger plugged in take a snapshot of the apps main window as well as the batteries info tab and post it here for us to see Voeg afbeeldingen toe aan een bestaande vraag

Gekozen oplossing

Zap the NVRAM (or PRAM)

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Press the power button, and as soon as you power up the laptop, hold down Command-Option-P-R.
  3. Keep holding down those keys for about 20 seconds. ...
  4. Then check the Startup Disk, Display, and Date & Time panes of System Preferences to make sure they're set the way you want them.
  5. Battery Calibration
