Hard drive, fan, and USB ports work but will not boot

My ASUS M51t will spin the hard drive, the fan will spin, and the USB ports work. The screen remains blank. I have tried to connect up external displays but it still shows nothing. The battery light is on and it does charge. Does anyone know if this can be fixed?

Hi @carsman248 ,

Can you get into BIOS?

Press F2 after starting the laptop to get into BIOS

Hi @carsman248 ,

It may be a corrupted BIOS that is causing the problem. Try a power refresh and check if that resolves it.

Disconnect the charger from the laptop if connected and then remove the battery (view first 30 seconds of video) from the laptop. Press and hold the laptop’s power button operated for 30 seconds and then release. This action restores the BIOS to its’ factory default condition.

Reinsert the battery into the laptop, reconnect the charger and turn on the laptop and check what happens.

If it starts and boots OK, you may find that you have to reset the date and time, but only this one time. This is normal. Also check the charge status of the battery on the Windows taskbar. If it is charging allow it to fully charge before disconnecting the charger. If Win10 is installed, create a Win10 battery report to check the status of the battery.

If it fails to boot or that you can’t get into BIOS then there is a motherboard problem

Yes this actually worked! I think it was the corrupted BIOS. After it went into BIOS it went to restart the laptop and it turned on. Thank you!

Hi @carsman248

Glad it worked.

As I suggested, if possible do a battery report and check the battery status.

If it is starting to fail the BIOS is more prone to corruption because when the charger is connected to the laptop, a good battery will absorb any minor power fluctuations from the charger and they won't be passed on through to the circuits but not so with a battery that is starting to fail. Just a thought.

I have a different problem now. When I first got the laptop turned on it worked perfectly on. When I shut it down, it would not turn back on unless I went into BIOS then turned it on. That only worked a few times. Now, I cannot get it turned on or into BIOS. I searched online and it said maybe CMOS Battery is dead. But that's almost impossible to replace on this laptop. I hope that's not it. Do you have any ideas? Also the date and time did not need to be reset when it turned on.

Hi @carsman248

I'm not even certain that the laptop has a CMOS battery.

There is no other battery, besides the main battery listed in the parts list for the laptop and there is none showing up in the video I linked in the answer above, although it could always be on the underside of the motherboard, which happens sometimes.

Since the power refresh doesn't work anymore you may have to open the laptop and inspect the motherboard for any obvious problems with the components or circuit board.

You may be able to find a schematic of the board. Just search for "(insert motherboard 'board number') schematic" which may be of some help. The board number will be printed on the motherboard.
