black screen but computer is still on

Things to determine what and where the problem may be:

Try shining a torch at an angle close to the laptop’s screen to see if you can detect an image at all when the laptop is on. It will be very faint if it is there, so trying this in a darkened room may help to see it if it is there

If you can detect an image you have a backlight problem.

This could be caused by a faulty lid switch, faulty ccfl tube, faulty inverter or faulty motherboard. The lid switch is a magnetically operated switch located behind the bezel of the display assembly, usually below the screen, with the magnet in the body of the laptop.

If you can’t detect an image then try connecting an external monitor to the laptop’s vga port and check if it displays an image OK. Some TVs have a vga ‘PC’ input port so that the TV can be used as an external monitor for a laptop. Just a thought

Try repeatedly pressing Fn + F8 (both keys together) just in case the display has been switched to the external display port. The display should switch between the laptop display only, the external display only or both displays on together, with each press of both keys.

If there is an image on the external display but not on the laptop’s display, then it may be a faulty video cable or cable connection at either end, motherboard or display panel, a faulty LCD panel or a faulty motherboard.

If there is also no display on the external monitor, then it is a motherboard problem
