My inputs and outputs stop working but my pc fans and leds stay on...

Specs: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2, RAM: 8gb ddr3, AMD radeon r7 250 series, EVGA 450 v, 1000 TB HDD…

About 14 months ago, I started experiencing some random shutdowns when using my PC but I didn’t think much of it… Last week, my monitors and my mouse and keyboards stop working and the only way to get them back is to restart my PC… sometimes it just loops where I turn it on and before it boots up the lock screen the PC crashes and restarts over and over… I’m pretty sure it’s my power supply but is the only way I can fix this problem getting a new power supply?

Hi @wantonsoup ,

As you didn’t say what you’ve checked here are a couple of things to try first before looking at a possible PSU problem

Try starting in safe mode and check if it boots OK and stays on.

If it does it is a driver problem.

Try repairing the Windows Startup and check if that works.

In the Windows Recovery Environment menu go to Troubleshoot > Advanced > startup repair. Do not select Reset this PC because if you select the wrong option after this you can erase all your data as Windows will be reinstalled

Have you got a restore point set in the PC?

If so try restoring the PC to a point in time before the problem started. You will have to reinstall any new programs installed after that date and also any updates but your data won’t be lost.

ok I'm going to try the safe mode. I don't have any restore points but I didn't install any programs besides updating my antivirus... I am also gonna try resetting the PC and see if that works.

You may want to check if restore points have been configured in the PC.

Go to Control panel > recovery > configure system restore.

For some reason it is not automatically configured in Win 10 as it was in Win 7 so it has to be manually set up.

After that it will create automatic restore points about every 2 weeks and also when Win updates are installed.

Be aware though that when a Win 10 Feature update comes along (approx. 3 times a year - major update e.g. Win 10 1906 to Win 10 1909) that you may have to configure it again if you want them as although it didn't happen the last time, the two feature updates before this removed the configuration and all the restore points and it had to be setup again. So you may have to remember to keep a check on it if you want to have them as a safeguard

Take out and reseat the memory modules.

If two modules then try one at a time.

Does the problem occur?

Same if you have a graphics card.

Are all fans spinning?

it's weird... Now It boots up, I can unlock it and it stays on (for hours) then when I try to use it... It crashes. I also noticed that my mouse and keyboard no longer light up when my PC is off but they used to stay on after I shut down.

Hi Enoch,

What had you done to it before " it's weird... Now It boots up..." ?

If crashing as soon as using then I would suggest running a full memory test. Any error messages? "Using" did you mean just moving the mouse or loading a program - or the actual running of it ? What I'm getting at is a large increase in memory usage.

BIOS update? It could have gotten slightly corrupted.

If the above check out good then I'm thinking, like jayeff, an intermittant power supply.

Long shot here. In about 35 years I've only seen about 3 bad or dead motherboards out of hundreds and one of those was from cracked traces on the board. Pressing gently down on board while on would cause a crash or reboot. Was in the area of the RAM modules. Board design did not have enough support near the RAM slots so pressing in the module caused a break in circuit.

Well that is because mouse and keyboard do not stay with a full shutdown.
