Mac won’t turn on after screen replacement

I was fixing a friend’s MacBook Pro 13” 2017 with TouchBar. I’ve worked on Macs and iPhones hundreds of times. I opened up the bottom cover and undid the pancakes screw to disconnect the battery and bent the flex cable back a bit to make sure it doesn’t contact the battery during repair. I went ahead and replaced the screen and then replaced the battery connector and screw.

After, I tried turning on the MacBook and I got nothing. No backlight on keyboard, no chime when I plug in power adapter, and no response from trackpad.

I went ahead and did the SMC reset and PRAM reset, but I got nothing. I then went back and replaced the new screen with the old one thinking the new one was defective or shorting out somewhere.

Nothing with the old screen either. So I put the new screen back on. I did some trouble shooting and found out if I leave the battery connector disconnected, the MacBook powers on with the power adapter plugged in. when I connect the battery back to the motherboard, it doesn’t power on even with the power adapter plugged in.

I think it’s safe to say it’s the battery or battery connector to the motherboard. Not sure if that connector piece is replaceable or not.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Curious what @danj has to say, but thinking maybe something with the battery connector?

did you follow the guide? MacBook Pro 13" Touch Bar 2017 Schermvervanging. Did you disable Auto Boot?

door

@danj I did not disable auto boot unfortunately, I did everything else however. Is the MacBook only useable with the power cable now or can it be fixed?

I sent off my MacBook to a repair shop that handles board-level repairs, and they confirmed it was the battery that was causing the issue, not the motherboard or power connector.

So changing the battery fixed the problem?

Was the battery replaced? And did the MacBook turn on after the battery replacement? I'm having the exact same issue but I replaced the trackpad on my A2338 MacBook Pro 13"

When this happens simply disconnect SMC ribbon cable and pancake battery screw first, then unclip all the Connectors that are accessible when back cover plates are removed... wait a few minutes. Reconnect all Connectors and protective plates then, the pancake battery screw and SMC ribbon cable. Turn MacBook over insert charging cable and lift the lid, your MacBook will turn on... after Initial start up it will turn on with or without charging cable connected

The data ribbon cable connector on the battery got damaged so this wouldn't help.

Plugging it into a charger to boot up solved it for me! Thank you a ton!

Ouch! I haven’t encountered that so I just don’t know. I think you’ll need to bring the system into Apple when they reopen.

Take some pics of the logic board markings as well as the systems S/N number, so when you get the system back you can see if they exchanged out the logic board.

Yeah I suppose that will be my only option now. Can you help me understand why disabling auto boot is necessary if you’ve already unplugged the battery before doing the repair? Thank you

door

Basically, the system is still powered! So when you start disconnecting & reconnecting things you can damage the logic.

door

@danj interesting, I always thought once you powered down the device, undid the battery connection, and held the power button for a few seconds afterwards, the entire system would be cleared of power

door

TouchID changed things! Now its powered all the time! If you store your system you need to do this as you can kill your system if you don't!

door

@danj so, as it turns out, Auto Boot was in fact disabled prior to the repair. Does that change your diagnosis?
