Intellivision 2 model has major static in picture

Hi folks! I have an Intellivision 2 console. when I hook it up with coax to my led tv, I can see the picture ok, but it's filled with static. I have two of these consoles and they are both the same. I have seen this same problem on two different TVs as well. I tried switching cable as well. Same. I am currently using the cable from a classic Nintendo (push in style plug goes to a box and converts to screw in type coax)

I tried cleaning the connection port of the Intellivision with a small wire brush and the I side of the port with some light sandpaper. No change.

Help?

Hi @oldgamer ,

Looking at the service manual for the console shows that you have to select channel 3 or 4 on a TV to use it. This harks back to the old analogue days of TV.

Does your TV have an analogue tuner option so that you can tune into the console or do you have an old VCR that you plug the game console into and tune to it?

Connect the vcr to the TV using the vcr’s Composite video connection (yellow + red white) or Component connection (red/blue/green + red white).

Hi Jayeff, I have a 22” flat screen TV that has a tuner, and I have it on channel 4. That’s where i see my picture. I have tried switching to channel 3 on the console and TV and I see the same poor picture.

I assumed that since my TV has a tuner I don’t need to use the VCR trick, but maybe I will try it anyways just to experiment with a new way to send the signal to the TV. I also have a powered RF modulator kicking around here I will try.

Thanks for the reply!

Ok I can't find my RF modulator, but tried the VCR trick. Same picture quality. Totally stumped here, I have tried different cables, so not sure what to do next

Hi @oldgamer ,

You shouldn't have to use the vcr if the TV has an analogue tuner but if there is a problem with the tuner you maybe wouldn't notice it these days as the signals are digital and use a different tuner circuit.

If it works OK when using the vcr's tuner then this points to the TV as being the problem, if the same problem then most probably the console..

Good way to isolate it one way or the other

Hi @oldgamer ,

Just had a bit of luck.

Haven't read it yet but found the service manual (see amended link above) which may help.

Cheers
