Why is there a blue vertical column on my display.

This morning when I turned on my Mac I noticed a blue verticle column in the 2/4 of my display (the far left being the 1/4). I saw that depending on the orientation of my screen the column would either go away are the whole screen would go black.

Not good ;-{

The ribbon cable between the T-CON board to your display assembly has a bad line.

This is a similar issue to the The Design Flaw Behind MacBook Pro’s “Stage Light” Effect problem Apple had. Here the ribbon cable likely got damaged from a bang hitting the black clutch cover which then compressed against the cable damaging it.

Would it be best to send it to Apple to repair, or should I fix it at home?

If you still have AppleCare I would let Apple deal with it. Don't wait as you don't want it to expire on you.

If you have AppleCare+ service contract they might charge you (at a reduced price) for the needed part (new display assembly).
