Hi,

Do not turn on your laptop!

Disconnect the charger (if connected) and then remove the battery (if possible) to minimize any further damage to the laptop caused by the action of liquids on electronic components. Having power available to the motherboard can make it worse.

If the laptop has an internal battery (you don’t state the make and model number) the laptop needs to be opened and then the battery needs to disconnected from the systemboard.

After this all the affected parts need to be thoroughly cleaned using Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ to remove all traces of corrosion and liquids.

Hopefully after this it might work properly again.

Here’s a link to a guide which explains the process.

Electronics Water Damage

Here’s a link to the ifixit Chromebook guides, (hopefully your particular model is listed) which should help to open the laptop so that access is possible.

If this seems too daunting a task, contact a reputable, professional laptop repair service experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote to repair the laptop. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later as the problems may get worse. They certainly won’t get better by themselves

Hi,

If you mean by "...I opened my Chromebook?" that you have turned it on, well what's done is done.

Do not try to turn it on again until the laptop has been opened, the battery disconnected and any corrosion etc has been cleaned away as per the directions in the link.

The idea is to minimize any impact that the liquid and the subsequent corrosion has on the electronic components.

Any electrical current that is flowing around the circuits in the laptop might find alternate pathways created by the impurities that are found in any liquid (except distilled water) and may damage the components.

These "pathways" are not in the design of the circuits, e.g. the liquid could create a short circuit connection between two components that would never be connected to each other in the same electrical circuit path in the normal operation of the laptop, thereby possibly damaging them.

Sometimes you can be lucky and the damage is negligible or minimal at best but the corrosion is ongoing and eventually other components may fail.

That is why it is best to open, inspect, clean, inspect again and test to see what works and doesn't and go on from there.
