Why does wifi stop working after 12.3.1 update?

We have had about 15 ipad mini 4s completely lose wifi functionality after being updated to the newest OS. In every single case, wifi functioned normally until after the update. some of them were updating from 11.x to 12.3 or 12.3.1, some were going from 12.2 to 12.3 or 12.3.1. The switch in settings for wifi is greyed out and cannot be flipped, and no wifi signals are detected during setup stages (there are routinely 4-6 access points or signals found on any given device in our building). It is absolutely without a doubt NOT a problem with our wifi, as it only happens in these devices, and only after they are updated to 12.3 and above.

Has anyone else seen this or have a solution other then the obvious “reset network settings” or “erase all settings” or restoring. This has not remedied the issue, and all antennas are properly connected.

well so far no progress. but we do have 3 more devices- all mini 4s- doing the same thing. no wifi after being updated to 12.3.1. for a total of 18 no wifi mini 4s. Apple this is a problem, but im sure you’ll never admit or address it.

@chriskennedy44 replacing WiFi module didn't solve this issue?

door

@sammyz replacing antennas did not. not able to replace wifi module at this facility, as currently no micro soldering. wifi was verified to work before updating the OS, so really doesn't make a lot of sense for it to be an actual hardware problem across so many devices

door

I thought I was the only person this was happening to. Took my mini 4 to apple and the tested it and everything and nothing failed hardware wise. They told me I could t be the software and I could exchange it for $299. I’m so frustrated

I have an Iphone 7 that had the same issue after updating to 12.3.1, I was told that the wifi module died at the same time as a 'coincidence'. Interesting to read this now. I still have the device, although it is basically a glorified camera now, as I did not want to pay to have the wifi module replaced on a 3 year old phone. I may need to look back into this. Thanks

It’s issue like this one where you want to give the middle finger to apple, iOS update has damaged WiFi module on these Mini 4.

A disconnected/bad antenna won’t grey out WiFi switch in setting, it can still be toggled on/off.

You’ll have to replace WiFi module (requires micro-soldering) to eliminate the problem.

Correct me if I’m wrong @refectio

i one hundred percent believe that the fix would be a new wifi module. just blows my mind that a software update just killed it. is it bad software for a certain batch of modules or does their update blow a capacitor in the IC?

@chriskennedy44 Many people reported same behaviour on iPad/iPhone after 12.3.1 update, you'll have to get a definitive answer from Apple or someone with more expertise on tackling simliar problem like this.

door

sadly im sure apple will admit no problem like that. ive got a stack of 15 devices that say there is a problem

door

i have had same prob for some time now ... it happened same way just barely past it's one year mark ... blah. Soooo !#^&@@. yeah apple said they would give me a small credit toward a new one ... just another way to sell more shite

We have had phones and tablets come in with the same type of issues. We have a new antenna coming in for one to see if that helps at all. I will keep you updated on the outcome of that. But right now it is looking like we are at the mercy of apple until they release a new update to fix the issue.

UPDATE:

the device that we had come in we replaced the two lower antenna's being the wifi antenna and the Bluetooth antenna and it worked perfectly no issues. This may or may not be the case for every iPad that you are experiencing this problem with.

we've actually tried that numerous times with no luck. the entire button to turn wifi on/off is greyed out in settings. In our experiences, when the switch is greyed out replacing antennas does nothing.

door

Yeah if it is greyed out it's most likely chip related from what we have seen with audio IC

ive found no solutions other than replacing the wifi chipset via micro soldering. we have found no other solution whatsoever. we probably have about 50 ipad mini 4s that lost wifi and usually bluetooth as well after updating to 12.3.1. no replacement of antennas or restore/dfu has had any change on this. we were hoping it would maybe be fixed in newer versions of iOS 13,

Is it working with iOS13 ?

door

Nope. Updated a non-working A1538 to 14.2, and it still has the vanished wifi.

I have a customer using many iPad Minis. 2's and 4's. They're also having failing wireless modules, but it doesn't seem related to the 12.3.1 update.

In fact, I can make the wireless come back on, randomly, by holding the home and power button together for a reset. I have yet to determine how long that lasts. Sometimes the wireless is ‘off’, and has a greyed out switch, sometimes it’s ‘not connected’ but shows no networks, and other times it’s either connected or sees networks to connect to (depending on if I reset the network settings)

The Mini 2’s don’t have this issue. They’re breaking cameras, but no wireless. So it seems limited to the A1538’s.

Hi ,

Did u find any solution to the Wifi's problem on Ipad A1538 ?

door

No. I'm planning on cannibalizing smashed ones to put them in the 'bad wifi' units with good displays.

Admittedly this is gonna sound like some bs, but with the settings screen open and the Wi-Fi slider visible try this:

Push the sides of the iPad Mini towards each other with the palms of your hands *Imagine yourself giving Spongebob a Coke Bottle figure.

Don’t apply enough pressure to break it, but enough to be uncomfortable to hold for about 15 seconds.

If you didn’t go green and Hulk it to death in frustration, then you might see the Wi-Fi slider change from grey to green.

If it doesn’t turn green then turn it off and back on and it should work again for a while.

I haven’t seen this “fix” mentioned anywhere online so hopefully it helps and someone who is more knowledgeable than I, can chime in with why it works (assuming I’m not delusional) and what to do internally to address the issue in a permanent maner.

I’ve had this problem several times - only 1538s, mostly ones that were “dead” . After charging and restoring - no WIFI - very frustrating. Both iOS 13x and 14x
