My computer only will boot properly in safe mode

I’m working on two iMac systems both are the same model.

They only will run in safe mode but won’t boot properly in normal mode.

  • I’ve tried formatting the hard drive with an external usb and install a fresh copy of the OS.
  • I’ve also change out the hard drive and re-installing the OS and that didn’t work either.
  • I did a NVRAM and PRAM reset that didn’t do anything.
  • I also ran it in single user mode and the fsck -fy that didn’t work either.
  • I also have an OS-X server and ran it from the server and it did boot but froze.
  • I did a AHT and nothing was wrong
  • I also took it down to my Mac store and they ran a test and said nothing was wrong.

Can someone help me please.

What OS X are you running? Are you booting from the internal drive when you boot in Safe Mode?

Have you ever changed the internal drives?

I’m running on Sierra and yes I’m booting it from the internal, and yes I did change out the internal drive.

Do you have a bootable external drive? Does the system boot up via it? You will likely need to use the Option key to enter into there Startup manager to select it as the boot drive.

Please review this: About the screens your Mac displays as it starts up

What are you seeing when you start the system normally with the original drive installed?

Update 3/20/19

Its time to pull the GPU board so you can check it out.

Take a picture of the board and the heat sink before taking the thermal paste & pads off and post the pics here so we can see the interface surfaces. In addition take a good set of sharp pictures of the GPU board both sides after cleaning off the dust and the thermal paste. Lets see if we see anything thats missing our damaged. I did do the external sorry I forgot to put that in. When I did the external it would have the apple logo but it would freeze halfway. All the internal boots it showed the apple logo and would freeze also.

Lets configure a fresh external drive as I'm suspecting the OS release the system is using is newer. Lets configure a High Sierra boot drive following this guide How to create a bootable macOS High Sierra installer drive. Then give this drive a try if it works you'll need to run Disk Utility to check the internal drives config.

Just did the fresh install of high sierra and still same problem. I can boot in safe mode but can boot normal. Normal mode it will load all the way then the screen will come all funky.

OK lets see what you mean by funky! Take a few pics of the screen or a vid and post them here for us to see Voeg afbeeldingen toe aan een bestaande vraag.

I'm starting to think you have a bad GPU board here

the picture show what happens when it does load all the way and the other one is when it just stops and hangs there.

@shawndougl9180 - A good sleep and some strong coffee does it for me! 😏

Best to post your own question with all the details as we really need to know your exact system and what’s happening.
