Ice maker only will do crushed ice, not cubed

My fridge is 2-3 years old, one day it quit doing cubed ice. Regardless of setting it only does crushed. I’ve messed with all the settings, Cubed is definitely chosen as the option

If it appears you are getting only crushed ice from the dispenser, check the following:

  • It is normal to get a slight amount of crushed or broken ice cubes before or while dispensing cubed ice. This is most common after crushed ice was used and you then select cubes. The remaining chips in the crusher blades or the bottom of the bucket get picked up as cubed ice is dispensing.
  • When cubed ice is selected, dispensing cubes requires energizing a lever behind the ice bucket to open a flap and allow whole cubes to come out. If an ice cube gets behind the ice bucket, this can prevent the lever from working. Remove the ice bucket and check for ice that may have fallen behind the bucket.
  • If no ice cubes are behind the bucket, try to dispense ice with the bucket removed. Shut the door, press the ice dispenser and listen for a loud snapping noise. If no snap is heard service will be needed. If you hear a snap, reinsert the bucket and try Cubed ice again. If still no cubes, then check for frozen ice in the bucket.

To remove and check the ice bucket:

  1. Pull the ice bin out by lifting it up in front and sliding it forward.
  2. Check for and remove clumped or shaved ice in the bin.
  3. If ice remains, run the bin under warm water until the ice melts completely. Dry the bin thoroughly.
  4. Reinstall the ice bin by pushing it all the way back against the freezer wall.
  5. Allow time for Icemaker to cycle again – to make cubes.
  6. Select CRUSHED ICE and then CUBED ICE.
  7. Try the dispenser again

Remove the ice bin and locate the slot the energizing lever would engage located on the tray that makes the ice cubes. The slot contains a slider which should be in the low/down position when cubes are desired. If it is in the upper position the ice maker will only produce crushed ice and will not response to commands for cubed ice. Nor will it properly engage the energizing level.

I had to remove the bucket. Hearing no click when dispensing ice, I fiddled with the slider. Just jiggled it. Tried again and VIOLA! Problem solved.

This is an easy fix!

When you take the ice maker bin out of the freezer, you will see a long, arm-like wire along the bottom of the bin. The end of it fits into a square 1" hole in the back wall of the freezer.

This arm and the mechanism in the hole are what turns off the ice crusher for just cubes to be dispensed. Like a clutch that allows you to change gears.

Set the ice bin aside and go to that square hole on the back wall of the freezer. Inside that hole, there is a horizontal bar, about 1/4" in diameter, positioned about 1/3 of the way down from the top of the opening.

With your finger, push it down. It will click into place. You'll see it's the bottom of a square that's in frame in that opening and where the end of the arm needs to go.

Once you have pushed that little square frame down, it will stay down so you can replace the ice bin and now have cubes.

Just remember that when it's working, that mechanism will bounce up and rest against the arm from the ice bin.

If you remove the ice bin, you'll have to push that down again before replacing the ice bin.

That's it!

I realized you can unhook the spring on the back of the wire rod and spin it counterclockwise once 360 degrees so it holds the plastic flap closed instead of open.

Nel, you nailed it ! Thank you

OMG NEL you are an angel! We’ve had this Frigidaire side by side fridge with ice/water dispenser for EIGHTEEN YEARS. For a long time now, I could only get crushed ice, and assumed that something was broken. I downloaded the manual quite awhile back and have just read through it again now, and this whole thing you described is not in there! But thanks to you, I can get whole cubes through the dispenser without having to open the door and scoop them out! ! ! THANK YOU! ! !

Push down the clutch that disengages the ice crushing function. It is on the back wall, behind the ice bin, or bucket, and the end of the long metal arm along the bottom of the ice bin inserts there.

If you remove the ice bin, you will need to push the clutch down again before replacing the ice bin.

Thank you, I just finished repairing a different issue with this ice maker where the ice lever was not engaging properly and basically had to push hard and almost break lever for ice to drop. I figured out how to fix that only to have the crushed vs cube issue after I put the whole unit back together. I had feared I had damaged control board as the fix I did had me taking the whole unit apart. Thank you for sharing this quick and easy fix!

The clutch will not stay in the down position. How do I fix that?

In my case the plastic switch in the back was broken, so I removed the metal control arm and taped the plastic flap at the dispensing end in the open position. Thus, I can get cubes but no crushed ice.

I removed the ice tub, saved the cubes, and turned the tub over to find an ice cube "stuck" behind the plastic flap which effectively kept the dispenser in "crushed" mode regardless of selection (cube or crush) on the front panel. Removed the cube, freed up the plastic flap, and when re-assembled (with saved cubes put back into the tub), the ice maker dispensed ice cubes properly.

What do I do if the bar inside the square won’t stay down?

What great advice, however, it appears that the piece in that little hole behind the ice bucket is loose. Also, a small piece of white plastic came from somewhere. I’m assuming that it came from that piece.

Do you think that we should get a replacement piece?

Thank you so much,

Sheri Myers
