What happens when you press the battery checker on the side? How many LED's light up and are they blinking?

What color is the MagSafe charger LED Amber or Green?

door

@danj The MacBook Pro had been tampered with when I got it so most of the external lights on the body light up. But the mag safe even when I use the charger that came with it brand new just lights up green like it knows that its there but it just isn't allowing the board to get the power. Starting to thing the guy I got it from possibly shorted the logic board.

@gschiemer What kind of 17" is in question ?

@gschiemer - So the battery checker works when you press the checker button? You see eight tiny LED's? Are they blinking or steady?

Gekozen oplossing

@gschiemer The core2duo A1297 from 2009 has a typical failure caused by a poly-tantalum capacitor that gets bad with time and creates a short in the logic board. As a result the Mac usually begins with having difficulties in starting up that get worse with time and with temperatures, the lower the temperature the harder the Mac can start, until it eventually stops until fixed. If that’s the issue, warming up the board may allow to temporarily startup the Mac, but would need a component level repair.

Give this a shot, unplug the mag-safe adapter, disconnect the battery. Press and hold the power on button for ten seconds. Reconnect the battery and mag-safe and you should get a spontaneous reboot. If so back up your data tp an external drive before going further.
