Shuts down while running heavy software.

I purchased the computer in May 2017 and this problem began occurring in July 2018. When running heavy software, games for example, and plugged into the AC adapter the computer will shut down and requires holding the power button for about 30 seconds to power back on. When powered back on it displays this message:

Real Time Clock Error,

System CMOS checksum bad

Time-of-day not set - please run setup program

The light will also flash orange 3 times pause white 1 time. The computer functions normally with lighter software. I replacing the CMOS battery with a CR2032 I ordered online, the CMOS battery needs to be connected with wires, and I thought it would be easier than trying to connect wires to a CMOS battery. This didn’t fix the issue.

What would be the best course of action to take? Is it likely the battery I ordered was bad/ not compatible or is it another part?

Hi @orne ,

Have you checked that the fan is running OK and that the fan vent is clean and not obstructed?

It may be that the laptop is overheating when running intensive programs

door

Ok, I'll try cleaning the fan, I don't think the vents being obstructed would be the issue on a wooden desk.

door

Hi @orne ,

I meant the vents being obstructed by dust internally, in the laptop itself.

I have this exact same problem with the same laptop model - did anything fix the issue?

I’m having the same problem. It’s not dust nor thermal paste problems. I have taken to a professional technician and he made a revision. In the end he did not know what is happening.

Custom built pigtail CMOS batteries rarely work correctly. Unless you know how to do it (and the notebook is old), just buy a cheap Chinese copy on eBay. At least you know these will work right and have the insurance of trying again if it’s a dud. That should solve the CMOS checksum errors.

These kinds of shutdowns are usually thermal related. Take the notebook apart and clean the CPU fan/heatsink and apply quality thermal paste like Artic MX-6. For the GPU and VRAM, replace all of the thermal pads. In addition, you may want to get Articlean as well, since Dell paste is a special kind of nightmare after it dries up to clean - I can’t even get rid of it with quickly with straight denatured alcohol (poisoned ethanol) on the aluminum heatsinks. Copper isn’t as horrible, but it’s still worse then anything else I’ve worked with from anyone else. Maybe these new wipes from Noctua and Artic will work to defeat Dell paste but I have yet to try it. I'll probably try it on my 7480 and see if the Noctua wipes work well.

i would say the Cmos part you ordered isn’t the same Cmos battery Number as the old one taken out, some are different but look the same, some are 3, 5 and 9 volts. seesm like your underpowered to run Cmos when engaged in a game, could also be the game your playing is too high for your graphics card as well.

anyway, the dell has this issue alot, take a look here at this video and follow the steps, see if that troubleshoots the issue for you, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Og8EzbhX...

Thanks, I'll try the steps in the video. I doubt it would be the graphics card, I've ran the same game on the same settings before with no problems. As for the voltage of the battery the original one and the replacement were both 3V.
