Ps3 console displays start up screen, wont function or turn off?

When turning on the Ps3 system it all of a sudden stays on the PS3 start up screen, it wont change to the home menu, it accepts discs but will not read anything, and it does not turn off, just keeps beeping and does nothing. I need help. This all occurred after I inserted a pirated movie disc, that it stopped playing within the first 10 seconds then said it wouldnt play it due to copyright laws, it froze on the menu and then when I ejected it this is what occurred.

Try booting the console to the recovery menu. Turn the console off, and hold down the power button until it has beeped 3 times, and then shut off. Now hold down the power button again, until it beeps twice, then double-beeps. A message should come up on your screen saying "Please connect a controller," plug your controller in, using a USB cable. Now scroll down, and select "firmware update" it should bring up a dialogue saying "Please Insert A Disk containing [Your PS3's Software Version] or newer, and press "Select" and "Start" together" You can download the newest PS3 firmware Here. You'll need a flash drive for this. Inside of the flash drive, make a folder called "PS3". Make a folder called "UPDATE" inside of that. Now copy the file you just downloaded to the "UPDATE" folder. Plug the flash drive into your PS3, and press "select" and "start" It should find the firmware, and reinstall it. This should solve your problem.

Thanks for the help I really do appreciate it, however after doing as instructed and re-downloading the 3.60 firmware again, it repeatedly gives me the message that the harddrive is corrupted and the system needs to be restored. I click on ok, it does the restore thing, freezes at 42 percent, for about aminute or two, then completes the install, before returning to the Hard disk corrupted message, and to hit the x button to the restore the system. I guess I need to buy a new harddrive and install it? I think this problem occurred because I installed the latest firmware a while ago, to play some new games, and blu-ray disks and now when it detects the pirated discs, it automatically says the system cannot perform theis illegal operation , and refers me to some website about the rules, and then locks up, This is not right as the system costs alot of money and Sony has no right to cripple the system because its attempting to play pirated dvds. Any other suggestions ?

It sounds like the hard drive died. The PS3 has no way of detecting pirated movies (Games are a different matter) so it may have been just a coincidence. You should replace the hard drive. You can use any 2.5" SATA laptop style hard drive.

Hey thanks again Chris, yeah the hard drive did die, which sucks. I replaced it with a 500gb one and it is working perfectly, I guess it was a coincidence and the main culprit was several power outages/surges which may have fried it just prior to me inserting the pirated disc . Thanks again...

Great job in getting it fixed. Now all you have to do is to accept Chris's answer as the solution. Again, great job and good luck.
