Shows connection error to computer

I have had issues connecting the camera to my computer (mac) for a while. I was trying to update the software and it requires a connection to the computer. When following the instructions to update, at the point of connection it stops and says - turn off camera, take out camera battery and reboot this software. I have done both a couple of times, and keep stalling when i get to the same point. It then just says the camera needs a service. I don't have a repair centre near me....

I'd suggest to try checking and possibly cleaning all the usb connectors not to leave anything untried. If you have the chance, I'd try an alternative cable too, since that might be a data communication problem. Not an expert of Sony cameras, just trying to rule out the simplest possible issues.
