What is the quality of the MacBook Pro replacement battery?

Block Image

Added image: Coconut app showing my current battery status

The battery life on my Macbook Pro (15", mid-2014, retina) has decreased significantly over the past few years, from about 8 hours of charge to barely 2, and I want to replace it, but don't want to pay $200+ at the apple store.

How does the replacement battery ifixit sells compare to the original battery that my laptop came with? I could not find any mention of a brand- what manufacturer is it coming from?

Also, some repair shops have told me that the top case may also need to be replaced along with the battery. Is there any truth to this? Will replacing my battery damage the trackpad since the battery is glued in? Any suggestions on how to avoid damaging these other parts while replacing my battery?

These are good batteries. Fits perfectly and gives about 8 hours of charge again. These are the real-deal. Buy the kit with the goggles and gloves. There is a real good chance of you breaching the old battery cells while prying them out.

Bought mine in November 2019 never was able to reach full capacity despite saying exceeded design capacity - Kit is good and enabled me to change it - after 4 months of installation its at 79% capacity and battery indicator shows 'Service Recommended. Looks like I may need to replace again - finding a decent one is going to be a task though

There is two methods in replacing your battery:

As for your batteries lifespan: How you use your system has a big bearing! Running your battery to the bitter end recharging and doing that over and over again will shorten your batteries life. Allowing your system to run down about 2/3 and then recharging is much better!

How about checking your battery using this app: CoconutBattery Take a screenshot of the main window and paste it here for us to see: Voeg afbeeldingen toe aan een bestaande vraag Lets see where your battery is now.

The IFIXIT battery is made by the same company Apple uses.

Update (06/28/2018)

You are getting close to the end of the batteries life (700 Cycles). Reference this Apple T/N: Determine battery cycle count for Mac notebooks. So its getting close to needing a new battery.

As for Apples battery supplier, they use a bunch of different suppliers as their need is so great, Simplo is one supplier.

Thank you. I added an image of the coconut app battery status check to my original post. I'm not exactly sure how to interpret it, but it seems like it's at 69% the original capacity. However, it used to last most of the day, and now it lasts two hours max, if I'm not running any power-hungry applications.

I typically don't run my battery until it completely dies, but I will keep that in mind more closely.

Okay, just curious, what is the company apple uses?

I have tried already 2 Simplo batteries as their full charge capacity degraded to under 80% in 17 cycles. Looking for a better alternative.

No battery lasts a really long time Its a consumable! So it will wear out.

The lifespan of a battery has more to do with how you use your system. If you can try keeping your system plugged in and don't let the battery get to low or fully drained as that burns a recovery cycle.

The quality of battery also has an impact. The expression you get what you pay for holds true! Cheap batteries ar the ones that are often that have failed Q/C or are cheap knock-offs. The seller is also important how long have they been around and what is their warranty and return policy.

Hello,

I bought my replacement battery for that same exact laptop on here. The first battery dropped very quickly in terms of performance, and as I monitored it via coconutbattery I was able to see that something was not right but I was too lazy / busy to take care of it.

Eventually I started to have random shutdown problems - most of which experienced when the MacBook Pro was running off the internal battery (not on AC). I contacted ifixit (a year after, mind you), and they sent me a new battery as a replacement.

In other words your mileage will vary, but if you go to a reputable source, they should stand behind their products. Sure, you will have to spend the time cleaning it and getting rid of the adhesive (you get better the second time around btw, hint: do not use acetone, use some light scraping with a strong plastic sprue, and use painter tape to remove the remaining residue), but in the end this is the cost of DIY.

As a side note, I should have qualified under Apple’s coating recall but the Genius flat-out refused to take the laptop when I told him it has a 3rd party battery in. So… Piece of advice, keep your old battery around just in case (or send it to me lol).

I just replaced my MacBook Air Battery here. Some notes:

Reset the SMC after replacement (did nvram as well just for voodoo)

Calibrate the battery by charging it up to 100% +2hrs, then letting it drain (used a live stream for 5 hours…), then charging back up again

Checked with Coconut Battery and it comes up as:

* Manufactured by simplo

* 58 days old

  • Capacity is correct (7109)

* Load cycles 2 - that’s me calibrating the battery as above

The vendor here in Aus was an eBay seller: turbodeals007 who also provided the screwdrivers required

Apple uses 7 different battery manufacturers, none of which will tell you it was made by Apple. Simplo IS one of Apple’s suppliers - just remember that Apple themselves make nothing at all. They do the design work and Samsung, Intel, Foxconn etc do the building. It even says on all Apple products “Designed by Apple…” nowhere does it say “Manufactured by Apple”!

This is a picture of my iFixit Battery’s health.

I installed it about 2 years ago, this battery is absolutely not cared for (either always on the brink of shutdown or constantly plugged-in for months on end.

I only have lost 5% in those 2 years and across 102 charge cycles… Pretty good if you ask me. It did put more life in that old, but reliable machine.

That's fantastic! However, your cycle count is extremely low for two years. Must be because you leave it plugged in a lot. It doesn't run down and get recharged nightly as many people do. Batteries get used up from cycling BUT leaving them plugged in or running them to shutdown is supposed to reduce battery life. Your use defies that concept. Food for thought. Enjoy your battery life!

~Same here, for Simplo manufactured replacement. I'm pretty sure they just use aftermarket controllers, with new battery cells and reset the charge cycles count.

I got one that looks exact genuine, one guy told me it is and i got it for 45$ the battery had the same 2015-03-06 date, though it did not hold charge long i got ir refunded and went to another store. Same one but this guy told me its compatible not genuine same price. Date was the same year and month, that just died in a week and got it swapped. Rhis one is 2015-02-21. It uses the same chips apples ones uses but all three of these batteries are reporting charge and capacity incorrectly.

Im down 33 cycles and the max capacity keeps bouncing from 8200-8600 depending on the load or when i connect or disconnect a charger like mac os will show say 85% charging if i discconect it may show 87% and if i reconnect quickly it may show 83% or even 89%.. How is yours holding up?

Im in India. A bit of searching turns out these batteries come from china or korea and are sold on aliexpress, many do purchase these and can even change the names or reset the cycle.

I allegedly got an apple battery but coconut also shows Simplo as the manufacturer. Using apple 'about this mac' gives a serial number that implies apple manufacture.I am guessing, as someone else said, they are buying up exhausted real apple batteries, replacing cells and then selling as new. It, at brand new, lasts 4-4.5 hours just reading email and a couple of forums. Also it shows a maximum capacity that is well below of what coconut shows is capable of. I clearly got ripped off. Just talked to the guy who put it in, he is willing to give me my money back and take the battery back. Says he will put the old one back in if he can find it. I am then going to pay apple to do this as I need more than 4 hours of battery time. Sigh. Unless there is a reliable vendor for GOOD replacement batteries.

I have the answer to the mystery of your battery being 1703 days old: It was manufactured in 2016 when Apple discontinued having batteries made for earlier Mac models. We have a late 2013 MacBook Pro. We tried using a Simplo battery in 2019. It had a 2016 manufacturing date, as well. It died quickly. We replaced it with a battery from OWC, macsales. That one lasted 15 months and we ran it about 450 cycles. Still not great. Next installing an ifixit battery. Hoping for better performance.
