Screen distorts and freezes, but show no distortions in safe boot.

The screen on my MBP 2GHz Core Duo randomly distorts the screen in a "chopped up" kind of fashion and freezes the machine. It happened for the first time about a week ago, the computer was fine the day after, but later the same problem reappeared. Now it is impossible to start it normally without the distortions. It mainly happens when there is some kind of motion on the screen, like a flash-ad etc.

The computer starts up fine in safe boot with no distortions or troubles, but on regular start up, the screen distorts when its about to show the login screen. Either in a "many layered squares with blue horizontal lines" way or as a gray screen with two black vertical "tire track" looking lines.

The distortions does not show on an external screen when it happens.

Is it the logic board, the screen, an overheating issue or something else?

The only thing I know about the condition of the computer is that is the battery is bad and should be replaced.

The logic board was also replaced one year after purchase.

Because the distortions only show up on normal boot, my guess is that your drivers may be corrupted.

Try opening disk utility and repair disk permissions, tell me how that goes

I tried repairing disc permissions. First in safe mode, then from the osx 10.6 DVD and finally from the osx 10.4 DVD. Niether helped, but I got one good upstart after the repairing in safe mode, but it only lasted a couple of minutes before it froze again and went back to the way it was before.

It looks like OS X may be corrupted, (assuming that when you booted from the DVD's you saw everything without distortion) Update your computer. I am honestly not sure exactly what part of the system is corrupted so you may need look look deeper into that. If all else fails, i suggest a reinstall of Mac OS X. Good Luck :)

Sorry for the late comment. I finally got a new backup harddrive and backed the computer up. Then i tried to reinstall Mac OS X. This did not change anything. The distortions show up after about 2-5 minutes of normal usage and looks normal in safe boot.

Might be a virus... checking that now... Scanning for 2 days with Clamxav now... found some stuff.. when the scan is finished and it worked I'll post back.

Have been strugling with it for a while now.. tried mostly everything... But it just gets progressively worst

Also have you tried making a new user? does the new user have the same issues?
