Screen no longer illuminates?

Everything works fine it appears and we can see the categores on the screen but the screen itself is no longer illuminated so in bad light you can't see anything and of course watching a movie or video is now not an options. Any ideas? Do I need to replace the LCD screen or is it something easier than that?? Any help you have would be appreciated. Apple said it would be $89 and it doesn't seem worth that to me so I would like to try to fix it on my own. Thanks everyone!!

Brian, this may appear to be silly to you but since I can not see your ipod I would like to start with the basics. Try the settings first.

You can configure iPod so the backlight turns on for a set amount of time when you press a button or move the scroll wheel.

To access the backlight settings:

1. Select Settings > Backlight Timer.

2. Select a setting from the menu. Options include having the backlight timer:

  • Off
  • Turn off after a period of time between 2 and 20 seconds
  • Always on

A backlight on/off switch can be added to the Main menu by selecting:

Settings > Main Menu > Backlight

Of course you can also try to reset your Nano by following the Apple instructions

If that does not work then you have either a failure on the backlight of the screen which would be resolved by replacing the LCD, or it could be that the logic board has issues with the circuit that drives the backlight. I am not sure if the 5th gen has a coil on the logic board that gave previous models problems with the backlight. So to recap, Try settings, then replace the screen and hope it works. If not you are looking to replace the logic board. Good Luck and let us know how it is going.

Thanks! Tried the backlight setting and was hoping you were on to something but unfortunately it did not work. Have tried re-setting a couple times but no luck. I watched a couple videos online on YouTube and on some other site about taking apart and the Nano 5th generationg and all I can say is - holy crap! I am a pretty handy guy but that looks like something I should not do. Am I wrong here? Should I take this on? Apple said the charge was $89 which is crazy as I can buy one on craigslist for that. I do see some other fix it companies for a bit less but should I just trash this thing?? Seems like a real shame.

It's a bit of a PITA to work on it but it would be cheaper than Apple. You could either give it a try or put it up on ebay and try to recover some of the cost for a new iPod. Those Nano's are pretty good players and it would be a shame to just throw it out. Good Luck to you and thanks for accepting my answer.

I've just bought a broken iPod to fix, and I wish Id looked at the guide first! I said something really unprintable like Brian. But.... It'll cost me about 1/5 of the cost of a new one,so well worth it. Don't throw it away Brian , take oldturkeys advice.
