lost power when pulling away.

My scooter Aprilia Leonardo 150cc has lost power when pulling away. I noticed a lack of power particularly when pulling away. On my way home last night, the cyclists were getting away from the traffic lights before me and when I had an uphill start the acceleration was terrible. I noticed the engine sounds a little muffled too. No problem at higher speeds though. Any advice would be warmly received.

I managed to get it moving, but it hit 10-12 MPH on mostly flat land (where 27 MPH was common). It felt as if the engine was providing power for a couple of seconds, then stopped the power delivery for a couple of seconds, and it kept doing this over and over. It was so weak that I had to push it up a hill to get it back to my residence.

Sounds muffled ? Like the exhaust pipe is plugged ? OR... the air cleaner is full of spagetti ? Either case, the engine will start and run fine. But, it will not produce horsepower to ride. Check the air cleaner, while its out, start the engine. Hold a playing card (King of hearts) near the exhaust tip.

Watch the card flutter. Ease on the throttle while watching the flutter. A good exhaust will flutter faster and louder. A plugged exhaust will tend to 'blow hard' and sound muffled. Muffler - muffled . Makes sense.

Foam air filters can be washed clean. Paper filters must be replaced.

Mufflers can be replaced, and some mufflers can be repaired.

Hope this helps.
