If your vacuum suddenly turns off during use, see the Dyson DC58 Shuts Off While In Use problem page for possible causes and solutions.
I suspect it is the battery protection circuit cutting in. This circuit monitors the battery voltage. After the motor is first started, the battle voltage will drop due to a load of starting up the motor. The circuit allows a second or so for the voltage to recover. If the voltage does not recover in this period, it shuts down the motor on the assumption that there is a fault that is drawing too much current and will cause the battery to explode into flames. As batteries age, their internal resistance increases and they take longer to recover from the startup load. Things like cleaning the filters etc. will reduce the startup load and this will temporary solve the problem. As you can see from the first few seconds the motor runs OK, there is nothing really wrong with the machine (or in fact the battery except that it is slowing down a little in its middle age.) The real problem is the design of the protection circuit. It is too simplistic in monitoring approach and is causing thousand of Dysons owner to replace their batteries when they still have years of use still left in them. Shame Dyson, shame!

Interesting. All Dyson will say is that Li-ion batteries deteriorate over time. No **** Sherlock... Don't expect any help from the owner support team. They just try to sell you a new battery at 20% of the original average cost of a Dyson!
I have purchased two Dyson units. My first one has the same issue as everyone else. Cutting out. Called Dyson and got the cleaning BS they must give everyone. I’ve stripped it down cleaned and no good. I’m sure it’s a design flaw with the circuit monitor. Now I’m waiting for number 2 to crap out. Needless to say, no more Dyson product for me.
My dyson v6 is doing the same cutting out what can I do
It’s been doing it since I first brought it home
This is the most interesting answer so far. However it does not resolve the issue.
My Dyson DC30 Type B, has been stripped down completely, thoroughly cleaned reassembled, fully charged the batter and even though it appeared to have improved the length of time being on, it quickly reverts back to its old habits, that is, switching of after a few seconds.
So the question I would like to throw out there is:
1) How can I repair the battery protection?
2) How can I prevent this happening in the future?
3) Is the battery protection contained within the battery itself?
4) If the answer to 3 is yes, how come a new battery does not resolve the issue?
5) What the heck is going on and why are we all having the same %#*@ issue and why it cannot be resolve? This is ridiculous.
Thank you. Rant over.
Most likely a blockage problem. The motor is set to turn off if uses too much current for protection. I would clean the filter and dismantle any accessories, espically any spinning brushes, as these can get clogged easily.

In my case, This is exactly what the issue was with my Dyson v7 Motorhead cordless vac! It was acting like it needed to be plugged in or like i needed to clean out the main filter but it was fully charged and the main filter (near top) was cleaned. But why were thing not getting picked up or falling back out as I was vacuuming? After reviewing all of the comments above I decided to simply flip it over and take the main vacuum head. It was very dirty so I took apart the main accessory head (with the spinning brush) to clean it and discovered that although it had been picking a great deal of dog hair, there was a lot caught in the main compartment of the spinning head. I removed the spinning brush and discovered a WHOLE lot of hair which was in fact creating a significant blockage, WHICH in turn wasn't allowing any suction, forcing the motor to "rev" a few times and then turn off. Once I thoroughly cleaned the main head accessory and reassembled everything, its working fine now... (knock on wood).
I have an animal v11, and had this exact problem. After reading this post I disconnected everything and looked down the longest tube. Couldn't see through it! I used a long dowel rod to pike out the clog, and now all is right again! Thanks!
Dyson are rubbish. Our new dyson has done it from the start. If you plug the battery back in for 10 seconds seems to fix it. NEVER EVER BUY A DYSON PEOPLE
how do you disconnect circuit?
Incredible that in so many cases, the good old Mk 1 eyeball (actually looking at it), helps solve any issues. E.g the suction head is dirty and blocked duh!
But, of course, Dyson support obviously have not got their act together, nor in some cases, the naive design department!
“&&^& DYSON!!!” Paid a lot of money for a Peace of $@$* product!!

Buy a SHARK......I’m going to. My Dyson animal runs for maybe a minute then packs up....It’s going in the bin.
I agree Dyson is SH*TE a problem no doubt deliberate. I,m with you Valerie Gonna buy a shark. And bin the Dyson....
Dyson is a piece of $@$*. Made to last 3 years then throw it away - buy a Shark
My Dyson absolute works fine on low power. But as soon as I press the button for full power it cuts out.
I have found that putting it back on the charger for a few seconds makes it usable again on low power. But it will cut out again if put on full power.
I bought this Dyson because I was impressed with the power. But it was very short lived.
Very disappointed in Dyson and will not be buying again. They need to sort this issue out or stop selling them !
Forgot to say…my son bought one and has the very same problem.

Had the same cutting out problem with SV03. Made sure contacts were clean. Before I gave up I checked the sweeper head: 6” clog of hair was the problem. Removed it and actually sucked up stuff without stalling.
Same problem. It seems to involve the button itself. Sometimes I can move my finger to a slightly different area of the button and it stays on a little longer. Very frustrating. I love my Dyson 35 but want to through it out the window when it acts up.

Bought the very first hand held Dyson had the same problem was told there was a fault with the on of button as out of warranty they gave me a small discount to purchase the new model as the problem had been rectified bought it ,out of warranty same problem never a hand held Dyson again

The filter needs cleaning. Try running it without the filter in. If it works fine, the filter needs cleaning, even though it looks clean. This happened to me.
Was dit antwoord nuttig?
Cleaned the filter. Didn't help.
Spot on it worked! Thanks.??
shuts off in Max mode in 2 seconds without the filter even in place or the wand. Will run on regular mode the normal time. So..... I think it's a design problem. I will NEVER buy another Dyson, I could've have paid 1/3 of the price at Walmart for a crap stick vacc with nearly no power!!!
I’m exactly the same am furious that I have bought one of these Dyson should really stop making them they are crap
I found a simple solution to keep the dyson from cutting out for a extended amount of time. I removed the battery by loosening the 3 Phillips screws then checked contacts on the vacuum for corrosion and cleaned with a light abrasive sand paper and rubbing alcohol and put the battery back in. It ran for a little bit longer so I took the battery out again and I bent the contacts on the vacuum at a bit of an angle so that there would be more pressure on the contacts. Put it back together and what do you know, it works!!! My conclusion is that there is not enough tension between the contacts from the battery to the vacuum. Do this and make sure your vacuum is emptied and filters are cleaned and I’m pretty confident your dyson will work. Your welcome dyson. If you are looking for an engineer I’m currently looking for work.

Seems like a waste of money to me
Worked. Unbelievable.
Yes, important to keep unit clean, but if it continues to cut out after a few seconds, follow Kyle Revell's suggestion and it will probably work a treat. Did for me anyway. Good onya Kyle.
We had the same issue with a relative new (under warranty) received battery.
Cleaned the filter, but it intermittently did shut off when using.
What helped was removing the cyclone from the motorunit. Follow theses steps till step 7; Dyson DC58 Cyclone Replacement
Then remove the filter if not done already and let the cyclone soak in warm water with some soap.
Flush the cyclone, until water comes out clean. Let it dry and re-assemble.
Worked for our DC58

I phoned Dyson and told them about it. They told me to remove the filter and clean the metal contacts. This solved the problem for me.
Was dit antwoord nuttig?
That's odd because these metal contacts are solely for powering the motorbrush.
Got a dyson finally. Cost a pretty penny. Now the nightmare starts. Keeps cutting off. I cleaned everything all filters and still no luck. Would of expected this from the knock offs. Now I will buy one of them as if they fail IAM not out of a lot of money.
Pretty sure it is what the fellow upthread surmised, it is some kind of battery protection that is based on voltage sensing or heat sensing that goes awry. Don’t think a new battery or cleaning will help. Best thing is to buy a new vac rather than waste money on a new OEM battery which is close to half the price of a new unit of an older model on clearance. The non OEM batteries use cells that have been rejected by quality control and they are assembled haphazardly without any control circuitry (I opened one up) to achieve the low prices, I would not trust them to last very long.

Dyson cordless Rubbish vacuum cleaner, wife wanted one
Shop salesman said I wouldn’t buy one , I should’ve listened to him. But I wasn’t brave enough.
Im fed up with only fifteen seconds of running, iv tried everyday everything ,could of paid for new hoover with wot i pa0id out..still dont work.SO IN THE BIN

I have a Dyson too. I have the same problem cutting out after 30 seconds on MAX suction. Cleaned filter, emptied bin, pulled it apart to clean all other sections of the unit. Put it back in the charger, use it the next day and same issue. I’m disabled, pulling it apart, cleaning it is tiresome. I pay a cleaner to clean my home, thank god they use their vacuum. Dyson is unreliable and you pay a costly sum for Dyson
Was dit antwoord nuttig?
Clean the filters thoroughly Bert. Most of the times the Dyson will shut down after a few seconds if the filters are clogged up. Soak the filter which can be pulled out of the top. Let is soak which some dishwasher soap for an hour and then shake it while under water. Rinse it, dry it and try again

My Dyson , when fully charged, cuts out after 20-30 secs. Putting it back on charge for ~10 secs usually allows it to run normally afterwards. The cut outs are irritating and does seem to be an issue that Dyson could address.
Was dit antwoord nuttig?
Mine does exactly the same.Did you resolve the issue?
I have a Dyson Animal and after 6 months it started to cut off a lot when using the power head. After reviewing all the comments I decided to check it for myself. We use it mostly for carpet cleaning and on the power head I noticed it needed some cushion so it won't drag on the carpet. After placing some cushion it works great again. I would use velcro type cushion that I cut into strip and stick it on the power head that touches the carpet. Hope this helps others.

If it’s cutting out then you have to take it apart and clean everything with lab-quality alcohol (Isopropyl Alcohol Lab Grade Rubbing IPA Disinfectant).
Was dit antwoord nuttig?
Ridiculous to have to take a machine completely apart for maintenance. The entire point of a "cordless stick vacc for quick cleanups" is to be low maintenance. Dyson has no more power than a much much cheaper Walmart product!!! Even when a "engineer level" deconstructed cleaning is done to it. Will never waste my money on one again.
Mine kept cutting out and we cleaned the filters - no effect - then used a compressor to blow through all areas - loads of dust came out! Works fine now. If you don’t have a compressor - take it to a garage with an air hose. You maybe need a cheap adaptor that is used to blow up balls.

I had the same cutting out problem Dyson V6 ... make sure waste collection container is empty ... clean the motor/cyclone filter ... then with the unit on charge press and hold the trigger button and the max power button for 30 seconds ... blue charging light should go off ... remove from charger then put back on charge should charge and work as normal
... ??
use sandpaper/steelwool to clean the contacts ifor trigger and motor. fixed mine 2 years ago with this method and neighbors the other day. mine was well used when i had the problem, neighbors is literally brandnew condition. he tried to get warranty, i suggested just buying a new one and sending back this, but cleaned the contacts and perfect.

I eventually stripped mine down completely, and cleaned everything when rebuilding.the machine was as good as new.
Then I got to thinking it must be the safety cutout in the battery. I found a battery online with a greater ampage at only £16. So as a last resort, I thought it was worth a try. Eureka ! It worked !
I don’t think the suction is quite as powerful. But the main thing is that it does not cut out.
I have not tried it on full power, as a dyson rep in curry’s once told me that, it is that which causes a problem with the battery cutout in earlier models.
Was dit antwoord nuttig?
It’s been over a year now and still working well. Also I have used it on full power and it is still ok.
In my case it was definitely the battery cutout that was the problem. And buying a cheap higher ampage battery has saved me from buying another machine.
Check out ebay seller leaderwolf 06.
I unplugged the charger and also wiped the tip that plugs into the charger port and it fixed it. I’m thinking the charger needed reset or I might need a new one but so far it works again even on max. So I think it’s the charger.

Our v7 motor head cut out after a few seconds on max, very annoying! Stripped it down, cleaned everything changed the filter, no difference.
As suggested, when it cut out I plugged it into the charger for a couple of minutes & bingo, works fine on max. Shouldn't have to do this, but thanks for the advice.

My daughter’s Dyson also shuts down After a few seconds, but nothing to do with battery or contacts of it, but the button on the handle is broken inside the handheld. Tried to put it apart, but quite difficult.
Question at DYSON, why don’t you release your technical information for this website for instance.
We WANT the right to repair, this means : Fred technical information, repair manual and affordable spare parts. When so, we will promote Dyson as a sustainable company. If not, at everyone : buy something else !
And one day , I hope soon, manufacturer will be forced to do it. Let’s promote sustainable index for consumergoods as soon as possible.

Correct Repair was to be found on You Tube. Broken red handle, common failure on these Dyson’s.
There is a re inforced model. Disasembling not so easy, but with the right YouTube instruction PERFECT
It's the roller thats the problem. It jams easy and the intermittent cutouts are caused by it not spinning properly. Clean the roller by rotating it in opposite directions to remove detritus-you'll be surprised how much comes out. Then press on the power whilst hovering the roller over the floor to get it moving properly. Once it starts spinning properly you can use the vacuum without cutouts
Was dit antwoord nuttig?
It happens when using a nozzle…
@robertwhit78521 Then try cleaning the other parts also...bottom line is it doesn't take much to make it cut out...the roller is the main culprit for me but I've also pulled it apart and cleaned it to make it work better generally

Also changed the battery, which hasn't solved the problem either. It is a Hoover FD22G.
Any suggestions welcome
Thanks

I’ve stripped mine right back to just motor and trigger area . Still cutting out , so I suspect either trigger or the motor protection cut out as people are saying . Just need to know a fix for it now !! We have nearly rebuilt the %#*@ thing !

I have a Dyson cordless I guess I’ve had it for about 2 or 3 years. Now it runs to the count of seven. It stops dead and then I can plug it for just a second Daniel run again for a few seconds. What could be the problem
