janicecallander sounds like your computer can no longer read the OS from the hard drive. Could be because of corrupted files or because of a failed hard drive. Try to get into the BIOS of your computer and see if it recognizes the hard drive in there. You can also set the boot order to USB/Optical drive and then restarted your computer with a bootable drive in which ever option you selected. From there try to see if you can access your original hard drive. I prefer to use something like a Live CD of Puppy Linux and try to recover the files. Ultimately it sounds like you will need a new HDD and/or OS. If you can let us know what model your Compaq is I am sure we can assist you further.
