Why does my phone get so hot in my pocket...battery life short too

Why does my phone get so hot in my pocket...battery life short too. I've replaced my battery..it used to go dead for no reason and then I would remove the battery and put it back in and all was well...replacing the battery solved that problem...but now it gets too hot almost to hold
