First you should have someone with gauges to check the Freon level because there is a low level switch in the system. Next you would visually observe the middle part of the clutch on the compressor to see if it is spinning when it's not blowing cold air. If it's low of Freon odds are you'll need to fix a leak in the system. There should also be a cabin filter usually behind the glove box which could be stopped up causing the system to freeze up which I must say sounds more like to be your problem.
