Upgrading to 8 Gigs of Memory?

Has anyone upgraded their MacBook Pro 15" to 8 GBs of Memory. I'm running Snow Leopard and don't know if upgrading from 4 GBs would be worth the cost.

My current set up is

MacBook Pro

Processor : 2.53 GHz intel Core 2 Duo

Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

What version of Pro?

8GB works but there are a few know issues on older models

You have 2 options above 4GB:

6GB (1x2GB/1x4GB)

8GB (2x4GB) (Usable on newer Unibody systems)

- Only the Santa Rosa and Penryn (MacBook (Pro) 3,1 and 4,1) can support 8GB memory. The MacBook (Pro) 2,1 only supports up to 3.25GB RAM accessible so adding in 8GB wouldn't matter since you can only access <4GB.

Update: New MacBook Pro(s) can support 8GB. As of September 2, 2009, the following 15" systems support 8GB ram:

MB985*/A – 15” Unibody MacBook Pro, Mid Range 2.66GHz (Dual Video Card)

MB986*/A – 15” Unibody MacBook Pro, High Range 2.8GHz (Dual Video Card)

MC026*/A – 15” Unibody MacBook Pro, Early 2009 2.66GHz (Dual Video Card) Note: This has not been confirmed

Have you actually run the Santa Rosa with 8GB of memory? I can't find any other references to it being done.

Thanks for the machine information.

Does your MBP have an access door for a battery on the bottom, or is the lower case all one piece (as pictured here)?

If there is an access door for your battery, you have a Late 2008 MBP 15" Unibody, and the maximum is 6 GB.

If there is no access door, you have a Mid 2009 2.53 GHz MBP 15" Unibody, and the maximum is 8 GB.

Check the program mactracker, it tells you all kinds of data about ram, and performance by model

I just upgraded to 8gb in my 2.8 GHz Mid 2009 MBP. I am a laptop and memory dealer in Israel so I bought my memory in the US.

The main difference for me is being able to run a 2gb Parallels Win 7 session pretty much all of the time. Various websites (like my bank) don't work on the Mac side here in Israel so I find I'm having to have Parallels running full time. With only 4gb of RAM that was a problem.

Check the apple store offers.

It seems that they are now supporting 8Gb:
