USB port on the right side no longer work

I have a Satellite S875 that is probably a couple years old now. The single USB port on the left side still works but the 2 on the right no longer do.

Hi,

Some things to try and to check:

With both the right side USB ports, plug in a USB device that gives an indication of being powered by the USB port e.g. a mobile phone - when plugged in even though the laptop may not "recognize" it the phone should give an indication that it is being charged, proving that there is power available from the USB port(s).

If there is no indication of power present, in the laptop go to Control Panel > Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus Controllers and click on the + sign to expand the tree. Right click on the first USB Root Hub entry and select Properties. Then click on the Power Management tab. Uncheck the box next to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. if it is checked. Save the changes.

Do this for all the USB Root hubs listed (as I do not know how many you will have and which one is for the right USB ports or the left USB port).

When this is done go back to the desktop and restart the laptop and then see if a) there is an indication of power from the USB port (as above) and b) if the USB device is being detected.

Here are some images of where it is and what it may look like in Device Manager,

If there is still no indication of power, use a strong light and a magnifying glass and visually inspect both the right side USB ports. Ensure that they are free from lint and dust and that the connecting pins are all there and that they are straight and parallel with each other. Compare them to the left side USB port if in doubt. If everything seems OK then there is a problem with the power supply circuit on the motherboard feeding those two USB ports.

If there is an indication of power present but the USB device still does not work, then go to Control Panel > Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus Controllers and click on the + sign to expand the tree. Right click on the first USB Root Hub entry and select Uninstall. Do this for all USB Root Hubs. Be aware that when you do this that any device that you have plugged into the left USB port will cease to work at this stage.

Once all have been uninstalled, go back to the desktop and restart the laptop. Windows will find the USB controllers when it restarts and will re install them.

Once Windows has finished booting to the desktop, allow the HDD activity to settle down and then try connecting into all the USB ports and see if they work.

Who ever answered this question is a LEGEND!!! Two of my three USB ports havent worked in years. Thankyou. My last working USB died thismorning, and when reading this article I was able to get the other two working again. Reformatting my laptop never worked in the past, but this did. Thank you so very much. I only had to uncheck the power management for the USB ports without having to go into further troubleshooting. You have no idea how much you have just saved me financially. I thought my laptop was completely frooted and that I would have to buy a new one. Hopefully now I have at least another 6 months with the one I am using now.... any ideas on how to fix a broken hinge for laptop screen??lol

Hi @ Elizabeth Roya Goodman,

What is the make and model number of the laptop?

Are you getting an indication of power from the faulty USB port as described how to test for in above answer?
