How do I manually open the DVD drive as I have a DVD stuck in it

For some reason the disc starts to eject then can't get out and goes back in. It is infuriating. I have tried all the software- and system-related solutions but these don't work, so I think that something is not opening or releasing to let the DVD out. Does anyone know how I can get into the computer to do it myself?

Yep, follow this guide and when you get the drive out, unscrew it until you can get the disc out manually.

It may difficult to eject a disk if the alu bottom case optical drive slot is deformed. Very usual with alu PBs and MBP models. Use a spundger (flat side) to restore the slot original shape.

Before you take the whole thing apart, try a pair of thin tweezers. They may be able to get the disc out.

Just in case, before you go opening up your computer, if you haven't already, you may want to quickly try the method Apple outlines in this article:

PowerPC-based Macintosh: How to eject a disk when other options don't work

Yep, the one thing about PowerPC Macs that Intel Mac owners wish they had: Open Firmware.

This method worked for me when a mini CD got into the slot-loading drive of my iMac G5 (please don't ask how that happened...).

I think QEII Student IT is right. I have decided to purchase the necessary tools and sort it out manually myself. Will change the battery while I am at it. There have been some other answers, like trying with a pair of tweezers, which I may go for in the meantime. But I have more or less decided to jump in the deep end and take matters into my own hands. I think it is the optical drive that is at fault here rather than anything else. The computer seems to want to work properly but the hardware isn't letting it.

PS On closer examination, if I run a flat tool from the top to the bottom of the opening to the optic drive, there seems to be some kind of flap just after half way that is stuck. It doesn't move away so there is no way the DVD can get out on it's own. I think this is what is preventing the DVD from coming out. And hence why all the other solutions (and thanks for those) aren't working. The DVD must be coming up against the flap on its way out then heading back in again.

If you can't get this solved with tweezers, opening the drive will mean you can manually move the flap without breaking the drive, (usually).

Reboot while holding down the mouse "button." Keep it down; it will eject the disc.
