I actually have this page in the manual it doesn't have any detail in image of the filter the caution says to install it in the correct direction or can result in engine problems but as you can see it doesn't show which end goes in first.
@chiefdano post an image of your filter with your original question. that way we can see what you see and should be able to guide you further.

The slotted end of the oil filter is facing toward the front of the bike. If you put this in wrong it will cause problems with the bike.
