Black screen after screen replacement

Is it possible to replace a broken ribbon cable that is part of the screen ?

It looks as if the cable to the smallest contact was damaged when replacing the screen.

Hello all,

I also have this problem! However, we replace the screen like we do hundreds of times and everything is fine, the customer comes back 2 weeks later and the phone has no back-light! our first thought was "bad screen" well replaced the screen and nothing, checked for water damage, check for long screw damage and everything seems fine! anyone has any idea of what could cause this? and what is the fix?

Thank you

HeyMargit. This is classic iPhone 6s backlight filter damage. No question.

You can do an out of warranty swap at Apple for $299 USD, or have a microsolderer change your backlight filter. It is a straightforward repair and quality shops offer no fix = no fee to look at it. We just fixed one from Norway last month. A shop called RepLab--they can give your more info since they've seen this exact issue before.

Don't blame the electrician--most of the stuff on the internet about how to change screens fails to stress how important disconnecting the battery first is before iPhone screen replacement. The 6s seems to be highly susceptible to backlight failure from simply pulling the screen while the device is still under power.

Sorry for your luck, but definitely repairable.

No, its not possible to replace the cable on the LCD without very very expensive equipment.

In saying that, more commonly, the back-light diode, filter, or driver ic is blown.

Did you disconnect the battery prior to changing the screen? If not, I wouldn't mind betting you have bigger issues than an LCD cable :S

I think he (that changed the screen) did it just because one of the screws to hold the plate covering the connection to the battery was lost. Also he is an electrician, so he should know. He says he has no idea what migth have happened.

I can connect it to itunes and restore /update. It recognizes the phone serial number, battery load etc. I activated the sim card. It beeps when communicating with itunes but the screen is completely black. I called it from an other phone and the signal goes through (phone is detected) but there is no sound from the phone.

When I pushed the power botton and called again I got this "phone is off" message so I guess that means that power off/on works.

Any more tips???

@margitkatarina that complicates things. there's a chance there may even be long screw damage on that device. All i can tell you is that it 100% needs board level repair. It could be any amount of issues but if the battery wasn't disconnected and the screws are not in the wrong order, it's most likely that the issue is at the backlight anode filter/diode. if the screws were not put back in the right order there could be damage to hair thin (or thinner) traces within the layers of the board, or there may even be a combination of both of those things going on.

The only real option here is to send it to a pro to have them diagnose the board at a microscopic level. If you head to my profile there's a link for a service that can help you locate a trusted board level tech as close to you as possible. Unfortunately all we know at this point is that the backlight doesn't work, and that the issue in on the logic board itself. You've done all you can :(

I just wonder... If there is a backligth issue, will the screen be totally black then?

It was not me that changed the screen but he is an electrian so he should know what "not to do".

I did change a screen on an ip5c and I had the same symtoms afterwards. Black screen and beeping every 5 sec when charging. I reset it 3 times with itunes and turned it on and it worked.

I actually wonder if apple has done something to detect an unathorized screen change and make software trouble because of that...

This is Norway and it is so expensive to have someone look for hardware faults I just don´t think it is worth it. There are people that buy defective parts and I am pretty sure the screen is okey, because I have tried another one that is okey and the screen is black then too.

To best answer your questions, i've had to break the comment up into several. Please excuse the length of the response but i think explaining this situation in detail is best.

yes, the screen will be totally black. there will be picture but no backlight, however on an iphone 6/6s screen when the backlight isnt working the picture is near impossible to see., so it appears totally black under any light.

You have raised a valid point which can confirm this though. The beeping every 5 seconds (roughly) when connected to a charger is actually the device telling you it "doesn't detect" a screen. in those cases you get no backlight, but only as a result of the screen itself not being detected. So, if the iphone 6s does not beep every few seconds when the charger is connected, it definitely detects the screen and is outputting picture to it. You just cant see it because there is no backlight.

Many people around the world replace these screens, so i can confirm that apple haven't done anything to cause the screen not to work. I can also confirm that your experience with the 5C was "coincidence" and that the restore actually had nothing to do with why the screen started working. More likely, the replacement screen had no foam on the back of the connector holding it firmly in place, and for whatever reason enough contact was made. This could have been from picking up and placing the device on a table a few times.

In any case what you are describing is 100% board level.

On top of this its worth knowing that an electrician and a microsoldering/board repair technician are very very different. I work on these devices on a board level, repairing things that cant be seen by the naked eye, and require a stereo microscope to work on. Electrical work on a house or car, is very very different to how a mobile device works. The backlight filters are "0402" in size, which makes them 1mm in length.

This happens on a regular basis when an esd strap isnt used, my theory is a static build up in the phone through handling. The fix is easy... disconnect the battery, remove all lcd connectors (prox sensor, backplate (where applicable) and lcd connectors. while the battery and connectors are still disconnected hold the power button for 20 seconds and release it. (this drains any static in the system). Finally connect all connectors for the lcd and reconnect the battery. If the lcd is in working order it should power on once again.

I did the "remove static trick" according to Jennychan, but the screen is still black. What to do now?

I am not sure if the cables are damaged, I just think the smallest connector cable migth be. It has a very tiny scrach mark across it.

Is it possible to replace those cables or do I have to get a new lcd. I guess the lcd could have been faulty to begin with also.

It´s not me who replaced the screen.

I can get to the phone trough itunes. I beeps when it communicates with itunes.

If I call it from another telefone, the simcard is recogniced but there is no sound or vibration from the phone.

This helped out immensely! Thank you!

I had a black screen, did this and it's working.

One thing is that the digitizer still seems to be off; I need to fix this.

Get a screen you know works, and connect it to your phone. If the screen works, then the cable is your problem.

If a known good screen isn't working, then you know you are in need of a board level repair.

I have tried another screen that I know works. And the screen is still black. The "board repair guy" I have been talking with says that there is very little chance that its possible to repair the phone. Has has not checked it yet though beacause it will be very expensive to hire him and I don´t know if it is worth giving it a try.

But - I had the same symtoms on an ip5c after a screen change and it turned on after restoring ios from itunes 3 times.

This migth be a silly question, but, what could possibly go wrong if you disconnect the battery, put the rigth screws in the rigth places, work in cotton clothes on a wooden table and have your bare feet on a wooden floor? When I work with a computer I have a wristband connected so that I am grounded. I guess thats what you should do when working with mobiles too even if you take the precautions mentioned above.

Think you answered your own question. If a cable is damaged it will cause a black screen.

I don´t know if it is damaged, but there is a very tiny scratch mark on the connector to the smallest cable. Therefore i think that it migth be.

But also the lcd migth be faulty from the beginning.

Is it possible to change the cable without buying a new lcd?
