Pleas do no put your phone in rice. rice is for dinner. Just ask Trent at riceisfordinner.com

The device immediately has to have the power removed. Battery must be disconnected, dont try to charge it, and it must be disassembled in its entirety. The impurities in the water need to be removed. If you catch it in the early stages you can do this with alcohol. Otherwise there are checmicals and equipment required to do this properly.

Water damage is caused by electrolysis. That means step one is remove the electricity, step 2 is remove the impurities. By putting the device in rice, you dry the water, and concentrate the impurities. Even if it works at the time, it will progressively get worse. Just drying the phone is not enough.

If you don't get to it fast enough, the board inside the device can become corroded and damaged. At that point, you have to have the board repaired, and possibly even external components to the board. There is a link on my profile to find a local (or the closest) board repair tech to you.

That's the absolute worse thing you can do.

Say you have a headache. You dunk your head in rice for 1 week. Of course the headache goes away after a day or two. Did the rice do it?

In this case though, liquid damage does not go away. It starts when the phone gets wet and continues at an accelerated rate when the phone dries.

First off you should immediately turn the phone off and remove the case, sim card, and battery. Then dry it with a lint free towel before putting it into the rice. You might end up having to replace the battery if you are not quick enough. See the Troubleshooting page for a more in depth explanation.

You were right until battery... then you hit a wall! After removing the battery, you should remove board and rinse off the liquid using IPA, dry, and assess for further damage. That's the bare minimum.

At this point, if the damage is topical and light, fixing the phone is an option.

If the damage is extensive, buy a new one. It will keep failing even after extensive and costly repair.

Ideally, you have to clean it in a pro ultrasonic cleaner instead of just soaking in alcohol.

Although this website is all about fixing stuff ourselves and DIY projects, successful water damage repair for phone boards is not in that category in my opinion, IF the damage is extensive and the data on it is important.

Otherwise, if the phone is expendable, the data already backed-up, and the owner willing to DIY it and loose it, !&&* why not play with it.
