My display only works when plugged into an external monitor

So last week, I tried fixing the loose hinge of my macbook. When I put everything back together, the display does not work anymore. Everything boots up fine except the display does not show anything. So i tried plugging an external monitor and now everything works fine, but my display still doesnt work. So now I have to use my macbook while attached to the external monitor.

Should I buy a new LVDS cable or a new display?

Check to make sure to see if you have a backlight. Of course you can always hope it is the cheapest solution which would be the cable , most likely it is an issue with your board.

Could it still be an issue with the board since my macbook turns on and runs fine? The only problem is that I need an external monitor to view the display.

I'd check/replace the cable between the motherboard and display first. Often these break or short due to being rubbed/moved back and forth and pinched every time the lid is opened and closed. Otherwise, the panel is likely the cause.

Goto Apple Logo >>System Preferences >> Display and select the Internal Display. Obvious solution but worth a try...
