A Fusion Drive is made up of two devices a traditional hard drive and a SSD drive which is fused into a single volume. Please review this SSD vs hard drives: which is the best storage to have in a Mac.

So the next question is do you want to break the fusion drive set alone here or are you thinking of replacing the HD with a second SSD?

While you can replace the HD with a second SSD you will loose your warranty coverage so make sure you want to risk this with such a new system. If you haven't bought your system yet or can return it think about going with a low end Mac Pro system instead. While it will be a bit more it will allow you more options.

OK, you still want to move forward here. First you'll need to break the Fusion Drive set. Follow this: How to split up a Fusion Drive.

The next step here is opening your system. You need to be very careful here as you can very easily damage the display. The newer 'Thin Series' iMac's use tape to hold the display on make sure you follow this IFIXIT guide: iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2805 Hard Drive Replacement while this guide is for the older system it is exactly the same for your system. Make sure you get the correct tools and follow the guide to the letter so you don't damage the display.

I replaced the slow 5400 RPM internal 2.5" HDD with a Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SSD.

The iFixIt guide was helpful. I did not use specific tools, just a small piece of a X-ray film, hard enough to cut the tape without damaging any of the components and scratching the black painting on the border screen. Going up and down three times was ok to cut the tape. Than, I've carefully tilt a little the screen and gently removed the two connetting plugs (see guide). I've used a small pillow...to get the screen slide to one side without fully detach it from the bottom border, adhesive tape still on place there.

I got full access to the HDD which I detached from the SATA plug by small movements (see guide). The SSD fits perfectly on its place, no heat sensor was present. To put screen back safely, I did use very small dots of an elastic glue such as UHU or similar, which allows a tear off since UHU stays gummy.

The SSD was a perfect clone of the original Yosemite HHD made by Superduper (format journaled) with a FAT32 partition for the boot camp volume cloned by WinClone. The iMac started first and fast at Win 10, then also Yosemite 10.11.4 was launched without hesitation.

TRIM was enabled using the Terminal command, as described on google. Opening, replacing and closing all done in less than an hour, and the Mac is much faster than it was.

Thanks!
