Is it safe to use MacBook Air without the battery?

Hi everyone, I have a Mid 2011 MacBook Air with a swollen battery since a week ago but I'm still using it until now and apparently it expanded more by day.

I use my laptop everyday because I am working on some papers despite having the battery swollen. I've already made a schedule to replace it next month but I'm wondering since I still need my laptop to do my work, is it safe to remove the battery and using it with the AC power only?

I'm afraid the battery will expand more and it could damage the hardware, so I want to remove the battery and using it directly to power cord.

Thank you.

My little brother used my macbook and the battery exploded. He is only 7 years old and was playing games. I feel awful and responsible. He is in hospital and will require several reconstructive surgery to his hands and face. I wish I would have seen this information before letting him use the computer.

First, remove the swollen battery now. It is dangerous for your safety as it could cause a thermal invent which is highly toxic and could wreck your laptop. So be extremely careful and cool down the computer and remove the battery and isolate it in a box with some tapes. You don't want to get hurt because of a MacBook battery.

You can still use the computer without the battery, but the processor will run smoother, which means the effectiveness of the machines won't be here. The CPU clocks gets slowed when you remove it, but you should do this instead of risking a thermal event.

Good luck and take care.

That sounds terrible, I will remove and keep the battery first then.

I think that's not a problem for me if the CPU clocks gets slowed because I only used it for a word processing task.

Thank you very much for the answer, that helps a lot!

Thanks for the answer! I think I read somewhere that in certain cases, using the MacBook Air without the battery is frequently done as part of the troubleshooting process. Mine used to overheat until one day it just stopped working. Just removed the battery and am about to power it up! Fingers crossed!

Thank you! I safely removed my battery after a little research and reading your answer. Although my device is a 2017 MacBook Pro, it is running significantly slower with no battery but I'm still happy as I was too worried about the swollen battery.

it works without battery but a little bit slow I don’t know why, if it doesn’t work the first time try closing the lid and open again. Sometimes its working but screen light doesn’t come up and you can see your desktop and open documents really dark when you look close enough

You should check the voltage of the power supply..minimum to charge battery is 16..6 .if it older that will trickle charge battery. 18.5 is the rated voltage allowing amperage of ip tp 3 amps. By the way apple power sipply os not a smart supply.

So use the magsafe plug and wire ceter pos amd connect to a good 18.5v brick and ypu dont have to balance the white box at the outlet not hear yhr arc pop of pluging in a hot on circuit..

Replacing a battery immediately is the best solution to avoid all types of threats both to the machine as well as the user. It also helps you directly, by having a new battery in place so that you dont have to compromise on the experience that you ideally have when the battery/laptop is new.

SIMPLE! Yes, it is possible!

You press the < POWER > button, then you connect the power cable, you keep the power button pressed for another 5 seconds and then it starts. You need to do this whenever you disconnect the power cord.

Some say that if the laptop is only on power, the laptop power decreases by 20% ... now if you work a little more complicated, you buy a battery when you can. But until then you can use it like that.

SMC will push the system into CPU Safe Mode. Ramping up the fan and lowering the CPU clocking so it doesn't over heat.

Not really useful without the battery installed.
