Increased difficulty starting in higher temperatures

In earlier years, I did not need to connect my 1983 300 TD MB station wagon, parked outside, to electricity until the temperature was below 32. In recent months, it was having some difficulty starting in the 40s.

Does this change result from the age of my glow plugs (5 or more years) or something else?

This may be related to one or more glow plugs operating at less than full efficiency. You can use the guides here to see how to test and if need be replace them.

The next most likely culprit is valves out of adjustment. If you haven't adjusted them in the last 15,000 miles then they are overdue. If they are too tight you will lose compression in your cylinders as the valves won't close entirely.

This could also be related to fuel filters (restricted fuel flow), lower engine compression due to wear, or other items but the first two are the most likely cause.
