How can I replace the power port?

Got a quote from a repair place that is more than the 18 month old Acer Chromebook C720 is worth. Thought I'd try to replace the DC power port myself. Is that doable? Thanks so much!

It is doable, but in most cases unless you are good with a soldering iron I would just replace the motherboard itself. MUCH easier. If you want to replace the DC jack you should get the model number of yours (should be written on the component somewhere when you have taken out the motherboard and can get a complete look at it) and search around on a site such as ebay for the correct one. Make sure it is the EXACT model. Again motherboards run pretty cheap online from $20 and up so I really strongly suggest you go that route instead.

while the prospect of desoldering the old and replacing the jack is rather daunting and kinda hard to do if you dont have honed SMD skills and equipment, actually opening the book and resoldering the connection , (solder weld) is pretty rudimentary if you have a decent fine point soldering tool ,,, i wouldn't advise trying it with a kludgy soldering gun or iron on which the tip is orders of magnitude larger than most of the SMD components on the motherboard

The power port on this model is through-hole, not surface mount, making the job much easier. I personally haven't had much luck with model numbers taken from the part itself; rather I just search for the computer model number + "power jack". The ones I got for my grandchildren's CB3-532 look identical to the one pictured for your computer, so if you don't have any luck searching for C720 parts, try looking for CB3-532 ones instead; I'm fairly confident they're the same.

All in all, if you're halfway competent with a soldering iron, it's not a particularly difficult job. I use a solder vacuum to remove as much solder as possible, then heat each pin and use tweezers to wiggle it and break it loose from the solder joint. Once all four pins are free, you should just be able to carefully pry it off the board.
