Thanks. A simple answer to a very frustrating problem. Couldn't find anything in the manual or printer instructions that mentioned this.

Do you have to have both cartridge inside color and black. Or can you leave one cartridge out

i just bought a canon pixma mg2522 and mine wont print either i only purchased black ink with it not color . returned it thinking something was wrong with it and the second one wont print either. id like to know the same thing carlyn wants to know. do you have to have both ink cartridges in place to print anything or should it work with just black?

I left the empty color cartridges in my Canon printer and just refilled the black tank cartridge. Hold the stop button for ten seconds....don't have a stop button? how about a cancel button? Maybe yours has a yellow triangle button. A computer analyst tries every key to determine its function. Be creative.

If you are out of colored ink:

Hold down the resume/cancel button. The resume/cancel button is the smaller button below the power button, on the right side of the front of the printer. Press for 10 seconds. You can now print in black ink.

If the printer is completely out of ink, you will see the alarm lamp, to the left of the resume/cancel button, flash orange four times to indicate the ink supply is low. You'll need to replace the ink cartridges.

For more information, please refer to this device's troubleshooting page.

Inkjet printers do not have white ink. So printing only in black and white is not possible. The printer mixes the black ink with color in order to produce different gray values. The reason why inkjets and color laser printers cannot print when there is an empty or missing cartridge ia due to the fact that everytime you power up the printer, it will initiate a charging and head cleaning cycle. Running this cycle with an empty or missing ink cartridge would quickly cause irreparable damage to the print head . This is why a printer will not work in this situation. When you press the button for 10 seconds, then it may work for a short time (probably there is a little ink still in the cartridge). If you truly want only black and white printing, and not have to spend money on color inks that you will "never" use, then your best option is a monochromatic laser printer.

Thanks, this is the very first time I've found a satisfying answer to why my printer is still consumming colored ink when printing in gray levels.

door

This is completely bulls**t! The white parts coming out of the printer...is the paper itself!

Then what is gray? - Well that's just tiny dots of black on the white paper, creating an illusion that makes it look like it's gray. However in a microscope, it would look like a pattern of black dots.

Also, if you mix colors of light (lightwaves), you get white, which is why a rainbow can be produced from white light.

However when it comes to colors of pigments/inc, you CAN'T mix them to get white. The colors will simply get darker, because pigments ABSORB light.

This is bulshit. The paper is white.

Your bubble is very limited. Were you just born? Every other printer I have had or used (dozens over the last 30 years) works fine printing or copying with empty color cartridges. Sometimes I want color, sometimes I don't need it. Sometimes I want it, but if it's out I can make due with b/w - and btw, gray is just less black ink. Some documents don't even need grayscale because it is all black text! I usually change my documents to dark gray to save black ink - works great. I just needed 5 more copies of a handout for a class today and 5 of 30 kids didn't get one because the printer is being stupid.

door

That is actually absolutely wrong. The printer uses the color cartridges to get a more appealing color of black. It creates gray by spraying small dots instead of a continuous area so that you see the white of the paper shine through,

The reason that they won' t print without a color cartridge is a combination of greed and avoiding complaints that the black doesn't look right or another color is missing

To print black ink only

  1. Go to devices and printers in Windows Control Panel
  2. Right click on your printer and select Printing Preferences
  3. In ‘Quick Setup’ tab select Grayscale
  4. Make sure Duplex and Borderless prints are disabled
  5. In Media Type Select Plain Paper
  6. Apply

that’s of Canon website They also warn that a small amount of colour ink will ALWAYS be used to properly maintain printer heads. This is what the first guy above was saying before others chimed in calling it BS

also the two black cartridges perform different tasks and can’t be used in the others place . It must be replaced

My mg 3670 is flashing 5 times with and without cartridges. What can be the solutions? Plz reply....

This works for ip3600 series canon printer. But it is troublesome cause it needs to turn off the duplex print every time for gray scale printing that do not use color catridge. Duplex print is required when need to print on both sides. of paper

Change the printer settings to ‘use only the black ink cartridge’ (sorry I don’t have time to explain how but Google it and you’ll see how to do it) and hit ‘accept.’ Turn off printer for a few minutes. Turn printer on and wait for all the random clanking noises to stop. Then hold the STOP button down for 10-12 seconds. Trust me this worked for me.

The answers that talk about just using “grayscale” or “only print in black” are WRONG. The issue is you have to override the printer’s demand that you order color ink if that cartridge is empty. The only way I know to do it is the method above. Has nothing to do with what color you set as your preference in the menu.
