Believe this... talking to people about engine oil is like talking about religion...

I believe that all major manufacturers make a decent lubricating oil and fuel is so clean today, you can eat off the insides of most engines.

But as long as you asked, I have always liked Quaker State oil. I usually go for a thicker oil than is called for, especially with older cars with high mileage. For example... most cars today are so well built, and the tolerances so close that a good 5W-20 will do the job. Without going into all the chemistry involved, I'll always put in 10W-30 instead, unless the car is still under warranty... in which case I always put in what the manufacturer wants me to put in.

If you live in especially cold climates, 5W-20 will do just fine. If you live in Las Vegas or Phoenix where over 100 degrees is not unusual, I'd certainly go with 10W-40 or even 20W-50 if the car is older.

Now that you are all confused, do what the lube shop says. Put in the brand that they carry.

putting in oil that is a different viscosity then the manufacturer designates is a super bad idea ... the engine is built to use a very specific thickness of oil (viscosity) so when you think you are smarter then the people who designed it, you are wrong, and you will pay dearly for that mistake.

Kateri McCray, first off synthetic oil is better when it comes to longevity and ability to handle extreme high temperatures without breaking down. It is more stable at higher temperature since it is "manmade". the higher cost can be adjusted because you can last 10,000, 15,000, even up to 20,000 miles between oil changes for some brands of synthetic.. all this is hypothetical and a bit of personal preference. the best thing to do is to follow your Volkswagen's owners manual. You can find a great list of Volkswagen approved oils on here and since Volkswagen uses oil standard 502 00 you can also check this TB Hope this helps, good luck.

5w-40 synthetic is recommended by manufacture.. vw oil seals and bearings are engineered to run on syn oil. I use mobile 1 or Total oil personally. Never had engine or turbo replaced 400000 k on it
