black screen on 17" G5 iMac ALS?

G5 iMac will chime on startup, Indicator light will glow then go out. Black screen and no sound on iMac. Also black screen on external monitor when setup for external monitor. Hard drive will appear and open for full access. on my iBook when attached via FireWire to the iMac and "T" key is held down on iMac. Any idea as to what's wrong or needs to be replaced.

Either the capacitors on the logicboard have gone bad (look for bulging, a common problem on this line of Macs) or theres an issue with the graphic chip.

Here you'll find a guide to the capacitor problem, but be warned: lead free soldering on multi layer circuit boards is no easy task. Been there, seen it, done it, bought the t-shirt ;-)

1 Opmerking:

Thanks, Have checked the logic board and found three caps where the tops are showing indications of a bulge. Sound like the logic board has to be replaced. I'm not up to doing the soldering. So it's off for repair. Have located a source that will guarantee a fixed price repair of iMacs.
