I was told that I had to buy OEM 24030AA041 Vehicle Speed Sensor/Transmission Speed Sensor for $ 341.00 . Yet I was told that my speedometer would not work if that was what it was and my car runs good except for the check engine light is on. Is it really necessary for me to replace it ?

Jen, if it does not shift erratic or does other things that could be disturbing, I'd clear the code first. Once you cleared it, see what your Subaru does. If the light or an error code comes up again later on, change the VSS. To find out how to clear the codes, check on here. Hope this helps, good luck.
