Vacuum will not go straight

I am having the "circle of death" problem with my Roomba Scheduler vacuum. Vacuum just turns around in a circle. Any solutions for this?

Please add more information so that we can help you out. Have you tried cleaning the wheels? Hair can often get stuck in there, causing unnecessary friction.

door

Becky Duncan, which Roomba do you have?

door

630 iRobot roomba

this topic will be helpful for everyone, thanks alot for this.

Becky Duncan, on a Roomba, this is called the"Circle Dance" not the "Circle of Death" :-) Here are a couple of things you can try before you get a chance to tell us which specific model you have. DRIVE WHEEL Module inspection and cleaning

Check the wheels for obstructions.

Push the wheels up and down several times and shake out any loose debris that may be trapped in the wheel well.

Make sure the wheels turn freely.

If there is uneven resistance between the wheels, hold down Roomba’s SPOT and

DOCK buttons for 10 seconds to reset the robot and try again.

Check tires for wear and tear.

If tire treads are no longer visible, or if large tears are present, replace wheel modules.

If wheel module problems persist on flat surfaces when there are no obstacles present, replace wheel modules.

The other thing to consider is dirt/grime at the optical encoders that sense wheel motion. Take a look at those and clean those with some isopropyl alcohol. Last but not least, you can also check the drive motor on the module.

There are two wires, a Red and a Black one that connect to the motor.Find those two wires on the connector that plugs into the connector on the main board, apply power form a 9V battery to those wires, the motor should turn in one direction. than reverse the wires, and the motor should turn into the opposite direction. If it does not, replace the motor, if it does you may have a bad component, either a diode or a power transistor (pretty common) on the H Bridge. Hope this helps, good luck.

I have the circling problem. Shark Ion Robot. Wheels require uneven pressure to turn by hand. In your instructions you recommended pushing the Spot and Dock buttons for 10 seconds. WHERE is the Spot button?

door

In a device called Roomba not Shark Ion.

door

My Roomba is doing the circle dance with the left wheel not moving. I tried replacing the cliff sensor loom, but this didn't help. I have tested the left motor with a 9 volt battery. That works fine. Is the PBC board the only possibility now. Rather than replace the board, is it possible to easily replace the components you describe and what are the precisely, component and size?

door

I see there are four diodes and four power transistors on the left hand motor bridge. Do I replace all four?

door

@malcolm2u I most certainly would unless you have any way to measure each one.

In my Roomba 620 one of the wheels stopped turning because it came off it's shaft.

You can diagnose by turning the wheel by hand - it should turn loosely without much resistance, compared to the other wheel.

I fixed this by cleaning the shaft and the socket and then attaching the wheel back. I had to press very hard to get the wheel far enough on the shaft.

It's really weird that the wheel came off like that considering how tightly it fits. Maybe it was poorly attached initially.

mine is going only backward?

Just wanted to add that on my 690, this was the issue I had too. One wheel was TOTALLY loose and spun with no resistance - this was the problem wheel. There should be some resistance and "engagement" with the motor mechanism. No matter how hard I pushed it back onto the axle, it would slip off when I reassembled & tried to run the Roomba. I eventually decided I had nothing to lose by trying to gorilla-glue it onto the axle (with a tiny amount of the glue... it expands!). It's only on its first full clean since, but so far, so good! And if it comes loose again, I can replace that wheel assembly.

door

@harriet this was my issue, and I have the same thoughts about glue. How long did it last?

Just a few ideas. (1) The wheel to the outside of the circle has a broken speed sensor. Could be a cracked magnet disk that is on the back of the motor. Do a visual inspection on the magnetic disk. You can see it on the back end of the motor. The fix is a new Left wheel assembly. If you run the built in test (instructions all over the place, you tube and more) You can see the left wheel turn very fast, like maximum speed, The right wheel will be slower. The fix is a new Left wheel assembly. (2) Mother board is not reading one or the other wheel sensor. This is a last resort thing. Easy to trouble shoot with an oscilloscope. (3) Right wheel fouled with crud causing it to run slow. Clean it with another real vacuum or blow out with compressed air. (4) Front Sensor covered with junk. Blow compressed air between the front bumpers and the panel inside.

Hi James. Number 1 was right. a small semi circular bit of plastic fell out of my 560 (I know 16 years old) and it started always turning right in a big curve. Still would clean etc OK. I pulled the wheel and motor out and the magnetic disk had broken. Tried super glue but it broke more. The disk is plastic with magnets embedded I think. Close inspection showed some corrosion on the shaft which has split the plastic. I will order a new motor, but I guess the other one will fail too. How much do you spend on an old thing?

Thanks for your help.

P.S. It still runs and sort of wall follows but seems to be doing the docking behaviour- drive straight till it hits a wall.

The broken /stuck motor will be the one on the inside of the circle. If one of the wheels is turning and the other is stopped, the stopped one acts like an anchor and the other wheel drives in a circle around it. If a wheel is slower than the other, it will be the one closer to the center of the circle.

Mine will turn to the right then turn to the leftwhen you touch either of the swithches on the bumper pad but not go straight

I cleaned all the wheels and checked for lint in the switches and wheels

still doesn`t work

I pulled the wheel module, opened it by removing two screws and discovered a broken gray wire. Repaired it and now it's working like new.

Becky Duncan, To make the Roomba go straight again, it will be necessary to clean the wheel sensors.

The wheel sensor works by using a rotating shutter between an LED emitter and detector. As the shutter wheel passes between the emitter and detector, a pulse is made. Or may be the broken motor will be the one on the inside of the circle. Make sure the wheels turn freely.

Becky, the sensors are working perfectly and have been replaced with a new sensor loom. The wheels are also both working as I connected them to an external 9v power supply to test them. It can only be a motherboard fault. But thanks anyway.

Is the Roomba running on dark carpets? Sometimes this will cause it to only go backwards. The Cliff Sensors react to the dark surface as though it was a cliff. It’s kind of odd but it’s possible. Another thing you might try is to check the cliff sensors for dust or dirt. They should be located at the front of the Roomba.

No. I have light-colored carpets.

door

I would still suggest checking the Cliff Sensors for dust or maybe a loose connection. That might require taking off the front of the Roomba though.

door

Oh you might check the front center wheel too. If you have pets, their pet hair can get trapped in the sides of the wheel and the roomba will sense something wrong. I think the problem is most likely the cliff sensors though.

Any luck Steve?

I have replaced: battery, wheels, and new bumper sensor harness. Now keeps telling me to “Move rumba to a new location and push start” over and over again.

You've done a lot of good work it sounds like! What it's asking you to do is to place the roomba in the middle of a room with no objects around it (including carpet) and then start it. Let me know if this helps.

Oldturkey03, your "If there is uneven resistance between the wheels, hold down Roomba’s SPOT and

DOCK buttons for 10 seconds to reset the robot and try again." worked a charm for a few seconds. After a short straight spell, my roomba went right under the bed (nothing on the floor) and did its circles. I have tried reboot, removed and cleaned wheels and vacuumed the roomba. Am at a loss.

my e5 has been a mess since day one, and now is not running in a straight line, I order both wheels assembly and still doing the same, any idea?

Rear wheel bearing dirty so it will not center.

Side sensor stuck or dirty so it thinks it proximate to something.

Then again, what does it matter if it won't run straight if it covers most all the floor over time.
