I unhoked the power cord and the internet connection. retried but nothing changed.

would Zapping the pram or any other Key commands help?

Try starting up from your original system installation disk. Restart with the disk installed and hold down the "C" key till the Apple logo appears. If this works go to the second screen pull down menu and run Disk Utilities on your hard drive.

UPDATE: I removed all extaneous USB connections. did key command Command-control- P-R (power button) and got the chime. failed to boot. Next D control S (unix) for a system read out. the check showed "Exit ____8" error. So I may have to wait to get the system installation disc.

It's possible that 1 of 2 things has happened. Either your hard drive has failed or the logic board has failed. Before you try any repair though, I would recommend that you let it sit and cool off before turning it on again.

I am not the original owner of this I mac. However I can contact him to see if he has the system disc. I tried to start the i mac again but no improvement. No chime, it goes to the white apple screeen, the wheel spins, fan goes on shut down! I am suspicious that when i shut down the Imac it "may not have shut down completely.....just not sure because I left the house.

I did some thinking last night. After looking back on the problems you are describing, it sounds more and more like the hard drive has failed and needs to be replaced. Here's a guide to replacing the hard drive: iMac G5 17" Model A1144 Hard Drive Replacement

Good luck in your repair and let us know if the replacement hard drive worked.
