I don't think it has anything to do with the hinges after testing rather with the back panel

Have you looked at the relevant guide to see what might be at that location causing this?

It seems to be the display connector

I'm sure Adam is a very nice guy but he works for iFixit and is thus limited on what he can recommend. This is an example of extreme overpricing and not adjusting for time. This display can be had for less than 1/3 of iFixits price thus making it an affordable repair. Just Google the part number, 661-2691.

Adam, the price on this part really need to be adjusted to the real world market price. The whole machine doesn't sell for the $400 you're asking for just this part.

I didn't have time to research the part, thanks for the info. I think I can safely say that we'd rather see people fix things with other parts than not fix them at all. :)

Adam, if you don't sell parts, this site will disappear and I'll have to go help people in other places.

Can't argue with that logic. I don't think these displays are our top seller though ;)

Having owned one of these great machines, I can testify to the hinge problems I had towards the end of its life. As the hinge starts to break, the display cables within the hinge can start to fray and break. You've got a few options:

  • Continue to use the laptop until the screen is unusable. At that point, you can connect a display, keyboard, and mouse and close the lid. You have to watch out for heat with the lid closed, but your computer will live on. Alternatively, you could make it run headless.
  • If you want to fix the problem, you'll have to replace the display. Unfortunately, you could probably buy an Intel MacBook for the price of the display, so this isn't really price-effective.

Hope this helps!
