The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 was released March, 2008. It is the third camera in the TZ series, with a 3.0 inch viewing screen, 28-280 lens (10x optical zoom) and 9.1 megapixels. The TZ5 also has 720p HD video recording.

lcd screen lit but remains plain white

My Lumix DMC-TZ5's LCD screen turns on, but while lit, only remains plain white. Other than that, it is fully functioning, as I can see the resulting photos taken when I open the SD card on the computer.

I was wondering what I could do to check if the problem is with the LCD itself or if it's something with the electronic components, that wouldn't be fixed by simply replacing the screen. I just don't want to buy a new screen, replace it, and then find out that the problem remains.

Same issue with mine, it has been a good camera up until now, but now the screen is generally white. Pictures are still good when I download to the camera, but hard to take them when you can't see or frame what you are taking. It will occasionally come back on, but 9 times out of 10 it is white. :-(

Panasonic should recall and do free repairs.... wishful thinking!

Hello,

I have the same “white display” problem with mine. BUT this happens only with a SD card in. When I remove it, the display operates normally, and the camera works like a charm (but on its own very small memory).

I tried another (brand new and tested) SD card, but the problem remains the same.

The SD slot contacts looks ok, tough…

Any idea? Thank you…

Lui Farias, the plain white is the backlight. You are not getting any image signal. One way to make sure that it is your LCD, is by taking a couple of pictures. If the images are okay, it most likely is your LCD. If not, you have issues either on the lens connector or with your logic board. Check your cable to make sure it is properly seated and that you have no corrosion on your connector, the cable and the logic board. Hope this helps, good luck.

Hey guys,

I have the exact same issue with my TZ5. For me it seems to be a problem with the contacts for the mode dial. If I push the mode dial up while turning the camera on, it starts with a white screen, if I firmly push down the mode dial while turning on, it usually works. Without pushing on the dial, I get the problem intermittently. I haven't tried to fix it yet, but I may take it apart and see if there are any contacts that can be bent into place. Any tips on disassembly instructions?

Cheers,

Matt

Yep, same as my DMC-TZ15. Otherwise a great little camera.

It definitely sounds like the LCD connector has loosened, you can try to disassemble the camera and reseat it however be VERY careful of the flash capacitor. It holds a very high voltage and can give you a nasty shock if you touch it, so make sure to discharge it first!

Failing that, it is probably a failed LCD. If even replacing the LCD doesn't work, it's probably a motherboard problem, which is going to be more expensive to repair than the camera is worth.

I have this white screen problem for last 3 months. Prior to that the camera Lumix DMC TZ5 worked like a charm. Usually when I turn it on it gets white screen. After doing on and off several times, it does come and and the pics are as good as they ever were. It seems as same issue as Matt's problem above. His solution of pressing the Mode Dial seems to work for me too. I wish there was a simple solution to the problem. I don't have the expertise or the tools to open this camera up and try to fix the contact issue.

I have the same issue with the white screen. I bought my DMC-TZ5 used off eBay to replace a prior model that stopped functioning. Not long after I got a large burnout like spot on the display. I shook the camera a bit and the spot shrunk a bit but I still have it. I worked around that for quite a while until the white screen started happening nd it became difficult to frame shots. Again, I smacked the camera in my hand while it was off and eventually after a few tries, it would come back on when I turned the camera on. It got worse though. It seems now that if I turn it on and the white screen comes on, if I remove the battery while it is on, then re-insert it and turn the unit off then on, the screen starts to work again, but only until the next time I power cycle it. Sometimes it will power cycle on and off, but for sure, if it sits, the next time I fire it up, it shows me the white screen. Ouftimazette, the battery is right next to the SD card slot. Maybe this is related. I need to take it apart to find out I guess…..

The answer has to be generic as more than one person has the same problem. Also people have said that pushing on the back buttons, sometimes brings it back. On close inspection of the large flexi inside the camera with a microscope. I found lists of broken tracks. See picture attached. In my opinion they can not be repaired and a new display is needed.
