Fan connector came off motherboard when I opened laptop

Hi all,

When I was removing the left fan from my laptop, the connector came loose from the logic board. It is a tiny connector with 4 pins.

Is there easy any easy way to put it back in? If I just glued the plastic part, perhaps the pins will stay "in contact" with the ends on the motherboard?

Otherwise, how would I go about soldering the 4 pins? I have a soldering iron pen. Would this be enough?

I thank you all i advance for your help in this stressful matter!

Update

Thank you so much for your help and advice guys! I will put some pics, so you can get a better idea of what it looks like:

Oldturkey, I have basic soldering skills, could you please explain with a bit more detail how you would do it?

Thanks a lot!

Luis - It looks like the other connectors got some damage as well.

The way you pried the cables off damaged them (a little to forceful). You need to pry from the sides, with just a little pressure (rocking them back and forth a little). I suspect that is why this one got pulled off.

Your in luck here as the pads appear to still be present. I would strongly recommend you find someone with the needed skills to re-soldering the connector back on. It does take some skill here and the proper tools (micro heat gun).

This is a SMT type of connector and doesn't really have exposed leads to solder down. The other connectors may need to be replaced as well as the edge part is broken which holds the cable part of the connector in.

Luis, gluing would not be the right way. You "may" just is not resolving your issue since it "may" not make contact. You could then run into further trouble.See if you can post an image off your damage to see what the contacts and the connector look like. If you are good a soldering small pieces, and have the tools, I would suggest you solder it back on, or let somebody solder it for you. If nothing else you can at least solder the fan cable directly to the contacts.

Luis I agree with Old Turkey, that is if you have not torn off the pads on the logic board, if you have it may not be possible to reconnect the connector or the fan leads.

You must try to put again. Test the continuity with VOM, from the connector from the FAN vs Pin the motherboard. Howevere you must discharge your body from ESD, using wristrap with ground connect for to avoid damage the motherboard.

The another solution is replace the connector completely with the FAN.

God bless you

I wouldn't go through all the misery of trying to resolder the connector back on, just run a couple wires from the right fan to to the left one, just make sure the sequence is the same, install smc fan control and set your right fan to highest setting, so you will get the max amperage to both fans, and be certin both wire guages match, good luck
