Screen suddenly freezes then fades to grey then eventually black

Hello,

I have a MacBook (13-inch, aluminum, late 2008).

A few months ago I started having an issue with the display.

All of sudden, the display freezes and then fades to greyish/bluish then eventually black. During that I can see some sort of scan lines as well. When it's black I still can change brightness of the display by F1/F2. So it's not completely turned off.

It goes back to normal if I play with tilting the display.

Just for a note. A couple of years ago my Macbook was accidentally sunk in water. But when I tore it down and dried everything it worked fine since then (except the battery which I had to replace).

By googling reading some posts here I found out that it might be either inverter board or LVDS/video cable.

I've checked the LVDS/video cable connector to the logic board and it seems fine.

I haven't gone further as I'm not sure what exactly causes the display issue.

Also I'm not sure if I should replace the cable.

Any ideas?

Thank you in advance.

Works with no issue on the external display.

Anton, you should change your comment to Cesar to an answer. That was a great fix and changing it to an answer will allow us to accept it. I am sure it will help a lot of people with the same problem out. Great job.

Sorry, took me two days to get the issue appeared again.

It's really fine on the external monitor. No fades or anything like that.

By the way, just figured out how to get the issue appeared.

When I hold and push down the right corner of the display it starts fading and going dark.

Hello Anton,

It seems to be the inverter! I turned on the laptop and the screen didn't work; then I unplugged the inverted and plugged it again and start working!

I have ordered a new inverter to change it.

Thanks for your help, best regards,

Cesar

Recently I had some time and try to fix it again.

By detaching the display and examining stuff around thoroughly I found out that the camera cable that goes to the screen through the left clutch hinge was worn out in one of its side. I could see a bunch of small silverish wires coming out of it, if that makes sense. First I thought it should be the LVDS/video cable that caused the problem but turned out it's not.

Anyway, as I didn't have a spare cable I tried to fix the broken one by just putting all the small wires altogether and wrapping it around with tape. Since then the problem's gone.

Maybe in the future, I will replace the cable. By the way, to completely replace it takes to tear down the whole display.

Hi I have the exact same problem with exactly the same MacBook.

Is yours now working again? To be honest I'm afraid of opening up the display because I have no experience with this and I'm afraid I might make it worse. Are you experienced with doing this sort of work? I guess what I'm asking is: could a novice like myself pull off doing something like this? :)

I'm pretty sure that if I take it to a store they will charge me between 100 to 200€ because there's only one place I know of that does this sort of thing, and they tend to over charge.

Thanks very much for your feedback!

Hey, it's probably too late to answer but anyway finally I had to replace the whole screen. I ordered it on eBay and followed some guides on ifixit that helped me to get the job done. It wasn't that hard. So if you have time and the right tools and are being patient it's all going well.

I also seem to have a problem with the screen. Mine's a Mac pro (late 2013) I recently had the screen replaced due to accidental damage but of late the screen started to flicker and there seems to be damaged and blurred lines on the bottom of my screen. When I'm doing my work the screen freezes and then slowly it goes into darkness. Funny thing is when i touch the bottom corner of my screen it works again. However due to this the blur lines have increased. It seems like a damaged screen but since I recently got it replaced i was very careful while using the Mac. So as far as i know I haven't damaged the screen or anything whatsoever. Please Help.

You should take it back to the store where you had your screen replaced. It's definitely the screen.
