I am missing both of the screws on the side panel where the strap is. I took the camera to two different local camera shops, and they could not replace the screws. Where can I get these?

Cathy, those should be M1.7x3.0mm screws. Obviously metric :-) I would try a hobby shop as well as places like mouser.com or even Radio Shack. If you have no longer at places like that, email me and I am certain of the dozens of cameras I have for repair I could find you a few:-) free of charge of course.

Thank you! I will try Hobby Lobby today, and I have a Radio Shack close by, too. I'll let you know!! I love this camera...it takes SUCH great pics, but it's a pain to have the side taped. Looks pretty ridiculous! : )
Perhaps an actual "hobby" store would be better. Not sure Hobby Lobby carries such items. Thanks! I did find some online, but they are only 3.00mm. Would those work, or would they be too short?

Call Canon at 1-800-828-4040 and ask for the parts department. They will send you 2 screws free as a "one-time courtesy". I just did it on 3/3/2014 and they are sending me my screws.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure you use loctite threadlocker (availble at home improvement stores and online) or your screws will fall back out with time. This will be the second time that I am replacing them. I bought the screws online the first time and never got around to dabbing threadlocker on them. They eventually fell out...

does anyone know which dimensions the 1.7 and 3.0 mm stand for?
These are fairly hard to find in the US. Purchased a set from australia's ebay - 10 for ~$6. If anyone finds a source more local, please post. Searching USA ebay, one can find people selling 1-2 screws for $5-7.
Also - I just called canon, and they 'discontinued the part number for the 790 IS'

Same thing happened to my G10; according to Canon's parts department, this camera is no longer supported and they no longer have the screws. They are available from US Camera in Colorado (seems to be the only source), not cheap ($9.05 for 3 screws, incl. shipping), but at least they have them.

I have dropped some three screws from my G10 chassi itself plus the two screws holding the strap, so 5 in total - don't know if they are all the same type? Are they all M1,7/3mm - in that case it should be fairly easy to find in some hobby shop I guess. Thanks, Tanja

Both of these sites have the M1.7x3 screws. I had to create an account to order, and them come in packs of 50, so with shipping, over $20 from both sites, but they had them.
