iHome iPL8 Troubleshooting
Released in 2016
In our research, we’ve found that there are several common problems that users face with this.
Exterior battery fails to charge
The battery of the device cannot be charged and powered.
Replace the battery with a new CR2450 battery which is a standard 3.0 V Lithium Battery (620 MAh). Open the backup battery compartment door on the bottom of the unit with a Philips screwdriver. Remove the exhausted battery and replace it with a new one. Make sure the side with the + sign is facing up. Close and tighten the battery compartment door with a Philips screwdriver.
Poor connection with battery holder spring
Replace the spring with a new battery holder spring: take out the battery first, and compress the broken spring and remove it with needle-nose pliers. Use the pliers to attach the new spring on the battery panel and put the battery back.
Device won't charge
The device placed on top of the alarm clock cannot be charged.
Device does not dock
There are several reasons why the device might not dock. First, the device may fail to match the dock connector; hence, you need to check the model versions of the iPhone and make sure the dock can recognize the device. Second, the phone case may be obstructing the phone port with the connector; therefore, you need to take off the phone case. Third, the USB port is blocked, so you need to use a fine nonmetallic scraper or cotton swab to clean out the blockage.
Micro USB connector malfunctions
Replace with a new micro USB connector. One reason that the USB connector does not work is because there is a coating on one or more of the pins that are preventing a neat conductive contact, or there is a pin grounding against another one. For example, perhaps there has been some contact with a liquid in the past, etc. You need to clean the pins to get rid of this. You will need a couple of things - 1) some cleaning agent, 2) a lint free cloth/piece of sponge, or an old toothbrush. Another reason why the connector malfunctions is because the USB connector on the iPL8 is broken. To replace a new micro USB connector, you need to unscrew the panel which fastens the connector, replace it with the new connector, and tighten it with a screw.
Unit is not properly connected to AC power
Make sure the unit is connected to a working power outlet; the unit will not charge on the backup battery.
Weak wireless connection with phone
The phone cannot recognize the device and they won't link.
iPhone/iPod is not connected properly
Remove your iPhone/iPod from the USB sync cable and then reconnect them. “Disconnect your Apple device from the iHome dock. Check the connector on your device to make sure that nothing appears damaged and also that there's nothing in the connector; repeat this process for the iHome dock."
Clock screen goes blank
The clock screen does not light up.
The screen panel is not functioning
Replace a new screen panel. Remove screws on the screen panel and open the device. Look for the projecting monitor and time display of the alarm. Remove the display and the flat cable connecting to the display. Try moving the flat cable and see if the display turns on again. If yes, reassemble the device in reverse order of the previous procedures.
Alarm power button is not functioning
Reboot the power button. Hold down the power button for 10 seconds then release. Then, press once on the power button just as you normally would.
