PC won’t turn on
Your computer will not boot.
Bad power supply
Check power and make sure power cable is plugged into a power source and the computer. If PC still does not boot, replace power supply.
If plugged into a surge protector, make sure the switch is in the powered on position.
Unit temperature exceeded
To protect itself from damage, your computer will not power on if overheated. Let it cool down. Make sure computer air vents are not blocked to ensure maximum ventilation.
Defective PCI or ISA card installed
Remove any expansion board that was just installed.
Power line selector on rear of computer is not switched to correct line voltage. Select the proper AC voltage using the slide switch.
Audio problems
Sound system is malfunctioning
Sound card is not working
You may need to update the drivers for your sound card which can be found here.
No sound from speaker or headphones
Audio cable is not connected. Connect audio cable between CD or DVD-ROM drive and the system board.
Error messages pops up
“No disk found”
Cable is loose. Reseat diskette drive data and power cables.
“CPU fan not working, Computer will shut down in a few settings”
The fan may be faulty and it is spinning too slow or the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust. Remove the dust with a can of compressed air.
There may be a fan temperature/speed setting in the BIOS. Check the BIOS settings.
Poor performance experienced
Your computer feels sluggish and slow
Processor is overheated
Ensure the airflow is not blocked. Make sure fans are connected and working. Verify that the processor heat sink is installed properly.
Hard drive is full
Bad graphics display
Your PC display screen is not functioning properly
Blank screen
The cable connections are not correct. Ensure cable connections from the monitor to the computer and to the electrical outlet are properly connected.
Characters on display screen are dim
Cables are not properly connected. Make sure that the graphics cable is securely connected to the graphics card and the monitor.
Diskette drive light stays on
The light on your disk drive will not turn off
Diskette is incorrectly inserted
Remove diskette and reinsert.
Drive cable is not properly connected
Reconnect power cable. Make sure all four pins are connected.
Other problems
PC beeps 5 times when turned back on
Your RAM may not be properly inserted into the slots. Shut the computer down, and remove the power. Install the RAM and clips on ends should close completely on their own.
Network card is not detected
You may need to install new drivers for your network card. You can find those here underneath the Driver-Network category.
Printer is not working
Your printer driver may not be installed. Check with your printer manufacturer to obtain a driver.
The cables may not be connected properly. Reconnect all cables.
Transfer data from the hard drive to create more space on the hard drive.
New device is not recognized as part of the system
Cable(s) of external device are not connected properly or power cables are unplugged. Make sure that all cables are securely connected and that pins in the cable or connector are not bent down.
Cannot eject compact disc
Disc not properly seated in the drive. Turn off the computer and insert a thin metal rod into the emergency eject hole and push firmly. Slowly pull the tray out from the drive until the tray is full extended.
