HP Chromebook 14-x013dx Troubleshooting

This troubleshooting guide will help you diagnose problems with the HP Chromebook 14-x013dx, released October 2013.

No display

The HP Chromebook 14 monitor doesn't display anything, and you know the computer is turned on.

Startup issues

A hard reboot can resolve many Chromebook startup issues. To perform a hard reboot, perform the following steps:

Power down the computer and disconnect all peripheral devices, such as media cards and USB connected items. Disconnect the power cable and the battery (to remove the battery, follow the battery replacement guide to remove the battery, then press and hold the power button for at least 7 seconds. Reconnect 'only' the power cable and turn the Chromebook back on.

Faulty screen

If a hard reboot fails to enable the display, the screen may be defective. Follow this guide to replace the screen.

Battery doesn't hold charge

Battery fails to charge beyond 1%, or the Chromebook won't start when connected to battery.

Dead or faulty battery

The battery needs to be replaced. Follow this guide to replace the battery.

No audio

The Chromebook's speakers are always silent or only output garbled, distorted audio.

Misconfigured volume

If the Chromebook generates no audio when it should, ensure the speakers are not muted or set to the lowest volume. The three volume keys located one the top row of the keyboard may restore audio to an inadvertently muted system.

Try toggling the mute key (located fourth from the right on the top row), and play an audio file to determine if sound is restored. If that fails, press the 'volume up' key, located second from the right on the top keyboard row several times to increase the volume.

Malfunctional speakers

Should the volume keys fail to restore audio or the speakers play distorted noise, the speakers may need replacement. Follow this guide to replace the speakers.

Touchpad nonresponsive to some inputs

The Touchpad doesn't register tapping, button presses, scrolling, gestures, or is totally nonresponsive.

Misconfigured settings

Go to the Control Panel, and click on Mouse or Change Mouse Settings. On the ClickPad or TouchPad Settings tab, click on Settings and ensure that the tapping, clicking, scrolling, and gestures checkboxes are enabled.

Faulty TouchPad

Follow this guide to replace the TouchPad.

Pushed-in USB ports

The ports that the USB devices insert into has been pushed into the case of the Chromebook.

Damaged I/O board

Follow this guide to replace the I/O board.

Unresponsive keys

The Chromebook does not properly register some or all keystrokes.

Debris in keyboard preventing keystroke

Examine the area under the keys to determine if debris under the keys is preventing the key from being fully depressed. If so, carefully pry the key out of its seating until it pops out of place. Clean the area with a can of compressed air or cloth to remove the debris. Then, press the key back into place until it clicks into its seating.

Poorly seated keyboard/motherboard ribbon

A common Chromebook 14 problem is a bent keyboard ribbon. This particular problem typically causes roughly six keys in a vertical line to stop responding to keystrokes.

Follow the keyboard replacement guide to open the case. If the ribbon which connects the keyboard to the motherboard is smashed or bent out of place, reposition it to its original position flat below the keyboard.

Defective keyboard

If the keyboard doesn’t respond to inputs at all, it is likely faulty and should be replaced. Follow this guide to replace the keyboard.
